Thomas Heatherwick is an explorer, an adventurer, a rule breaker, a game changer, a risk taker. He makes ideas happen. Since 1994, his design studio has cultivated a unique practice with a spirit of discovery and invention at its heart. You may recognise some of their most iconic creations: a reimagining of London’s red double-decker bus, the Olympic Cauldron that carried the flame at the 2012 London Olympics, and the UK Pavilion which transformed the skyline at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Our support enabled Heatherwick Studio to showcase 'Inside Heatherwick Studio', a major exhibition that toured East Asia in 2015. This #WorldArchitectureDay, let's look back at some of Heatherwick's most iconic designs. 📸 The UK Pavilion; photo by Hufton+Crow 📸 The New Bus for London; photo by Iwan Baan 📸 The Olympic Cauldron; photo by Jasper White 📸 The UK Pavilion; two photos by Iwan Baan #BritishCouncil90

‘There is a whole heap of learning, incidental and explicit, that can go on when you’re working with a partner school.’ The longstanding partnership between Muthill Primary School in Scotland and Juliet Johnstone School in Ghana has given pupils the opportunity to discover each other's countries and cultures, and enabled staff at both schools to learn from each other. Watch Keri Reid, Muthill’s head teacher, talk about the joys, opportunities, and benefits that the partnership has brought. 🤝 The Study USA programme, established to support the Northern Ireland Peace Process, has funded over 2,000 students, thanks to the NI Department for the Economy and the generosity of US colleges. One of our proud alumni is Mark Owens, now Honorary Consul General of Ireland in Ohio. Mark participated in the program in 1998 and continues to mentor current students, positively impacting US-UK relations. #StudyUSA #BritishCouncil90

We are delighted to be a strategic partner for the What Works Hub for Global Education (WWHGE), an international initiative aimed at helping governments implement education reforms at scale. It focuses on translating evidence from research into actionable policies, enabling education systems to adopt best practices that improve learning outcomes like literacy, numeracy, and other foundational skills. As a strategic partner, we will act as advisor, facilitator and convenor, enhancing the impact of the WWHGE through the use of our education networks, contextual insight, local knowledge and convening expertise. #WWHGE's annual conference kicks off on 25 September. In 2009, we brought together nine deaf youth volunteers from #Nepal and nine from the UK for a unique experience through our Global Xchange partnership with VSO. The participants lived with host families, worked in local communities, and created and performed Sign Language theatre. Participants from Nepal learned British Sign Language in the UK and even developed a Nepali version with the National Federation of the Deaf (Nepal). Watch the project's supervisor Dipawali Sharma share her experience in sign language 👇 #BritishCouncil90 #InternationalDayofSignLanguages
