Black ecologists in the environmental sector are significantly underrepresented. This Black History Month, inspired by the theme ‘Reclaiming Narratives’, we’re celebrating success stories that challenge the status quo and highlight the remarkable contributions of Black researchers and ecologists. Meet Lionel YAMB, a passionate marine ecologist from Cameroon, who currently manages and organises scientific data for the Agoa Sanctuary in the Caribbean. He is also developing a research project focused on the sustainable management of sharks and rays in the Lesser Antilles, integrating ecological monitoring with social science methodologies to create conservation strategies tailored to the local context. Read on to see how he’s reclaiming his path in the world of ecology. 👇 #Ecology #BlackEcologists #BlackHistoryMonth #Nature #Conservation #ConservationInCameroon

A new report by Wildlife and Countryside Link finds that English action is stalling on policy progress towards global biodiversity goals. Of the 26 agreed biodiversity targets🐟🌳🧑🌾 🔴12 were ranked red for little policy progress 🟡12 were ranked yellow for some policy progress 🟢0 goals were ranked green for on track 🔙2 targets were also deemed to have gone backwards. The UK was seen as a key player in creating the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022 and now needs to step up and fulfil this leadership role at #COP16Colombia
With the doors of #COP16 nature talks about to open in Colombia, how are things looking on policy progress towards nature targets agreed at the last talks?🌎 Years of inaction mean the new Government has inherited a lot of work to do, with most of the targets seeing no or even backwards progress👎 We’re calling for the UK to turn things around & show leadership for nature on the global stage🌱 This means unveiling new actions to restore nature in the UK🌳 Read more👇 https://lnkd.in/eP-DSjq2

There’s just 6 years left to meet the target to protect 30% of land and sea for nature⌛️ But findings out today in Wildlife and Countryside Link's 30 X 30 Progress report reveal that the amount of protected land in England has fallen to just 2.93% while protected seas are at 9.92% 📗🔗https://lnkd.in/eybq-f7B Urgent and decisive action is needed, including publication of clear 30x30 criteria and a delivery plan to ensure that protected areas are halting biodiversity loss, enhancing ecological resilience and providing services for society. If the UK government wants to be seen as a world leader at the upcoming COP 16 nature talks in Colombia, it must make good on home commitments for meaningful nature protection on land and at sea. Joseph Bailey, Senior Lecturer in Ecology, Conservation, and Sustainability at Anglia Ruskin University and lead author of our 2022 protected areas report said: "The 30x30 England Progress Report reveals the stark reality that as 2030 races towards us, there remains a huge distance to go, with less than 3% of land and 10% seas effectively protected in England. Urgent and decisive action is needed, including publication of clear 30x30 criteria and a delivery plan. "The protected area network is critical for protecting species and habitats from harm, enhancing ecological resilience, providing services for society, halting biodiversity loss, and tackling the effects of environmental change. To achieve this, protected areas must have the resources necessary to be protected in the long term through effective management and monitoring, while being well connected to one another, and inclusive of interested groups and individuals. "The UK government aspires to be a world leader on nature and climate at both COP16 in Colombia and COP 29 in Azerbaijan, but to do so we must make good on our home commitments towards meaningful nature protection on land and at sea."
