'It is distressing to read that thousands of pupils with special educational needs (Send) are being refused additional funding due to increased financial pressures faced by local authorities,' writes BPS Division of Educational and Child Psychology chair Dr Gavin Morgan in The Guardian today. 'The grim reality for parents and pupils is that getting appropriate access to Send support and an EHCP is becoming a postcode lottery. 'The overriding issue is that there are not enough educational psychologists employed by local authorities to provide Send support and intervention, nor to undertake the assessments for the EHCPs required. With 20,000 children waiting for an education, health and care assessment, we cannot keep up with the increased demand.' Read the full letter: https://lnkd.in/e8YvKXSa

DCP Faculty for Children, Young People and Families Annual Conference 2024 Join us in London on 18th November 2024 for the DCP CYPF 2024 Conference. The 2024 Conference theme ,“From shallow roots to developing fruits: working together to help children and families without permanent homes thrive and grow”, will focus on children and young people who do not have permanent homes and/or are living in temporary arrangements. This could be for a variety of reasons including being: • Homeless and/or living in temporary accommodation and/or frequent moves • An asylum seeker or refugee • In the care system • In the criminal justice system • In a family fleeing Domestic Abuse The number of children and young people in some of these groups is rising and may be disproportionately affected by a range of issues and challenges compared with the wider population. This is compounded by intersectionality, with some ethnic groups, socio-economic groups or genders over-represented and perhaps experiencing additional difficulties as a result. Despite this, we know that support and services may be harder for these children, young people and their families to access. The conference will provide an opportunity to come together with a range of speakers to think about ways of improving psychological wellbeing for children, young people and their families who do not have permanent homes and/or are living in temporary arrangements. Location: BPS London Office, 30 Tabernacle Street, London, EC2A 4UE Attendance is available in person only. Registration will close at 10:00 GMT on Monday 11th November 2024.
