👐 What steps can OA journals take to build engaged research communities? We asked Scholastica users who work with community-driven OA journals published by scholarly societies and universities to share their experiences for a new blog series. This #JournalTipsTuesday, we're rounding up some of the best advice from those blogs (linked in the comments!). 1️⃣ Start with an engaged editorial board Lajos (Lou) Balogh, founding editor and EIC of Precision Nanomedicine, advised to start with editorial strategy: "You need a respectable and representative editorial board that is ready to work on the journal. Almost everyone will say yes if you invite them — because who wouldn't want an editorship on their resume? The trick is finding respected editors with time." 2️⃣ Reach researchers where they are Peter Coles, Founding Editor and EIC of The Open Journal of Astrophysics, discussed the importance of word-of-mouth outreach among existing research communities: "Last year I was on sabbatical, which gave me the opportunity to travel and give invited talks about OA publishing in astrophysics at institutions in France, Spain, the UK, and Australia, and to audiences around the world via the Internet. Other members of the editorial board have also done their bit in promoting the journal. Our submission rate increased only slowly at first but is now more than doubling each year." 3️⃣ Prioritize community recognition and involvement Prof. Dr Naseem Naqvi MBE, founding editor and EIC of The Journal of The British Blockchain Association, said fostering an inclusive publishing approach is key: "Collaborate with relevant academic conferences, workshops, and other forums to raise awareness and showcase your journal's value to the community." Dr. Naqvi also shared examples of ways JBBA has created its own community forums, including launching: "The Scholars in Blockchain international symposia, BBA Journal Clubs, university workshops, research webinars, Monthly BBA Forums, panel discussions, and academic roundtables to connect directly with authors, readers, and editors, encouraging a collaborative knowledge-sharing environment." 4️⃣ Remember that community-building takes times Finally, every journal editor we spoke with emphasized that community-building is a long-term endeavor. Journal teams must stay the course as they work to build up a following. Derius Galvez, Editor-in-Chief of the National Society of Black Engineers B.E.S.T. Journal, said it well: "Know that the work you are doing can positively impact communities and highlight research that supports the sharing of solution-driven ideas. Be patient when launching, do not be discouraged if you have a slow start." 🌯 Wrap up These are just a handful of the great tips shared by Scholastica users for our #OAWeek24 series on building engaged journal communities. Check out the links to the series posts below to read more. Scholastica thanks all the editors who took the time to share their insights!
