How do we decolonise the teaching of contract law? Deborah Chay and I spoke about the importance of context in contract law. Introducing context means we talk deliberately about law and society as well as the imperial origins of some key cases 🔑📚 Lots of discussion of connecting discrete areas of law, legal systems around the world and the law in Papa New Guinea and Nigeria 🇳🇬🇬🇳 A delight to present to a wonderful audience in School of Law - University of Leeds at the CIRLE Innovation and Research. Brunel Legal Advice Centre celebrated National Pro Bono week with Kirsty Richards, Head of Family and Director at National Legal Service Solicitors (NLS). Through our partnership with NLS, we offer a specialist legal advice service to the vulnerable in our local community. NLS provide direct supervision of our students in interviews with clients, preparing of advice and the training of our students in offering this service.   This is our third year of running the Brunel Domestic Abuse Clinic which has been growing steadily as we continue to help clients from the community in their journey to access justice.   Thank you National Legal Service and Brunel University of London for your continued commitment to Pro Bono. I am pleased to to announce the online publication of a Special Issue of the Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law co-edited by Professor Alison Diduck and me, which pays tribute to the work of Professor Felicity Kaganas, recently retired after nearly 4 decades' service to the academy. Felicity is one of our leading socio-legal feminist scholars of family law. Her pioneering and innovative work has been at the forefront of unpicking the changing landscape of private family law for over 30 years. For nearly 30 years Felicity was my teacher, supervisor, mentor, colleague and friend. Amongst her numerous publications, she and her close friend, Professor Alison Diduck, published the only socio-legal critical Family Law Cases and Materials book that illuminated the role of gender in family Law: https://lnkd.in/eArdm2nb We hope that this Special Issue does justice to the depth and breadth of her scholarship. Yesterday, with my colleague Solon Solomon, we hosted The Society of Legal Scholars International Law Section seminar on ‘Teaching International Law in the Digital Era’ at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (University of London). One can always count on our Prof. Alexandra Xanthaki (UN Special Rapporteur for Cultural Rights) to shake up the status quo. Unveiled at the UN General Assembly, the report by Professor Xanthaki urges immediate reforms to defend the rights of Black female athletes, Muslim women, and transgender athletes. This powerful UN report has criticised states and international sports organisations, including FIFA and the IOC, for neglecting the protection of marginalised athletes.
