🔊"We’re delighted to partner with BRE once again; their trailblazing #sustainability work continues to inspire what we do at #ModeScore and #ActiveScore. The 2025 #BREEAMAwards will be even more meaningful for us, as our assessment systems will be used jointly with #BREEAM’s to evaluate the Transport category," said James Nash Co-founder of ActiveScore. 🌎 We are delighted to welcome ActiveScore as the headline sponsor of BREEAM Awards 2025. Their support will help us celebrate the world’s most innovative projects and people, inspiring future #sustainable development. Since 2017, ActiveScore has certified active travel facilities worldwide. In 2024, they launched ModeScore, reducing #realestate #emissions with assessments covering public transport, private vehicles, and active travel. The #BREEAM Awards shine a light on the very best in sustainable design in the built environment. BRE founded BREEAM over thirty years’ ago to enable designers and developers to make projects more sustainable and support #decarbonisation. 📄 Discover more about our headline sponsor ActiveScore here: https://lnkd.in/g95G6Pie 📄 For more on this story: https://lnkd.in/enN7NdnX 📄 Register your interest for the BREEAM Awards 2025: https://lnkd.in/eAMKgNCQ #BREEAMAwards2025 #sponsor #sustainability

📄 The Innovate UK-funded #AI project, BuildAudIt is creating an ambitious new AI-enabled survey platform to enhance the #circulareconomy in existing buildings, reducing cost and experience barriers for organisations looking to understand their building stock, ahead of refurbishment for #netzero. 📁 BuildAudIt is being developed through a year-long collaborative programme between organisations developing digital and AI-based solutions in the construction sector, including UNIT9, Enable My Team (EMT), the Building Research Establishment (BRE), Reusefully Ltd and Imperial College London. The UK alone has 30 million residential, public and commercial buildings which need refurbishment to achieve net zero, while 50,000 buildings containing valuable materials and components are demolished per year. Through application of state-of-the-art AI, BuildAudIt will increase the efficacy of pre-demolition and pre-refurbishment audits which are essential for driving circular outcomes for building materials. It will also mean a reduced level of experience is required to complete an audit, enabling cost barriers to be lowered nationwide as building owners prepare for net zero refurbishment. Running until March 2025 to develop a proof-of-concept platform, the partners behind #BuildAudIt plan to achieve commercialisation through 2025. 📄 Effective daylighting in buildings can increase #energyefficiency by reducing the need for electric light, while improving task performance, educational attainment and mental health. However, maximising daylight can be complex, with poor design resulting in too much daylight increasing the risk of glare, while undermining #sustainability benefits if more energy is needed for heating and cooling. With 98% of homes using low energy lighting in 2021, up from just 3% in 2001, empirical research is still needed to provide better data on how the successful rollout of low energy lighting has impacted energy use across all building types. 📁 Our new report, "Lighting in the Net Zero Journey: driving efficiency, circularity, and daylighting for sustainable buildings" outlines our recommendations for government in terms of #efficiency, circularity and daylighting. 📄 As the new Labour government reaches its 100th day in office, we’re looking back over what we wanted to see the #UKGovernment do to improve the safety and sustainability of the UK built environment following the publication of our 100 day roadmap in July. Our recommendations included: - An extension of building regulations to include #embodiedcarbon, setting a timeline for its implementation across new and existing buildings. - A commitment to decent, safe homes for all, with the publication of a Decent Homes Standard for the private rented sector. - Cutting the lifespan of domestic EPCs from ten to five years to increase their usability and #netzero readiness. Whilst some progress has been made in the short term, with firm plans for the Decent Homes Standard to apply to the private rented sector, there’s still a need for government to maintain its focus on key issues, such as ending our reliance on gas boilers and how we manage #energy, #carbon and #sustainability for non-domestic buildings. In its inaugural report, the Building Back Britain Commission publishes new research into the drivers of #productivity for every local authority in England, supported by BRE as a member of the Commission’s Policy Advisory Board.   Five areas were identified which can act as enablers or barriers to productivity, affecting people's lives, their working patterns and homes. One of the areas, housing, utilised BRE’s #costofpoorhousing research.   As well as helping policymakers to identify how to boost investment for growth across the country, this research shows where local authorities in England have the most mixed performances across these areas of research. While they may be succeeding in some areas, others are holding them back from reaching their full potential.   The research showed that a 1% increase across 146 local authorities with ‘high productivity potential’ can generate an additional £82 billion in GVA for the UK economy over the next five years.   The Commission will use this research as it phases into the next stage of its engagement, which will now focus on the policy recommendations that can support a strong and investment-led business environment needed for the economy to grow in every part of the UK.
