What can we do to be more comfortable inside during extreme weather? From cooling down in the more extreme summer temperatures, to staying warmer in winter – all without relying on fossil fuels. Find out more in this week’s ‘Sandbox’ FOMO5... From understanding more about our buildings to changing behaviours around the way we consume energy, there’s something we can all do to create better conditions within our indoor environments during extreme weather – from artic blasts to heatwaves. In our latest Sandbox episode, our panel explored this idea, and gave insights into what the individual can do by understanding more about insulating our homes and our energy usage, not only to make our buildings more comfortable but also to help mitigate the effects of climate change. Discussing the ‘on demand’ nature of energy services, our special guest Smith Mordak said: “I think in some ways these heat as a service models, it’s a kind of ‘Netflixification’ of heating - you’re paying for a service. I think sometimes the kind of 'on demand' service mentality leads us to accept that we can just have everything whenever we want to have everything and disconnects us from the reality of life. “And the same way as you check the weather or you look outside the window before you decide what you're going to put on before you go outside, maybe we need to just be thinking a little bit more about the weather and our energy use. Lara Balazs, Cities Energy Associate, Buro Happold, said: “I think that getting comfortable with building physics and also with energy is such an important thing to be able to understand how you can use it better and just make sure that you're using our shared resources in a much more efficient way.” Joining our regular host Andy Duncan in this episode, are Buro Happold experts Lara Balazs, Cities Energy Associate, and Tom Newby, Director, Structures. Our special guest in this episode is Smith Mordak, Chief Executive at UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and an architect, engineer, and writer, who regularly contributes to national and trade press including the Guardian, Financial Times, Dezeen, and The Architect’s Journal. Buro Happold provided a broad range of technical services to support the outline planning applications of two adjacent sites on 43-hectares of former agricultural land near Runcorn. Homes England took these schemes to Outline Planning due to their complex nature, with a vision for delivering up to 850 much-needed new homes. Our team worked to overcome a range of constraints at Sandymoor South and Wharford Farm, including the West Coast mainline bordering one edge and the Bridgewater Canal bordering the other, an adjacent flood alleviation zone managed by Halton Borough Council, overhead power lines crossing the sites and a railway line bisecting through. Book Tower has received the Repositioning Award from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) Annual Awards program! Recognizing significant post-occupancy upgrades that innovatively extend the life cycle of the building, the award acknowledges technical solutions that make extraordinary contributions to existing tall buildings through adaptive re-use, renovations, function changes, retrofits, recladdings, system upgrades, etc. Originally opened in 1927 as the tallest building in Detroit, Book Tower has been transformed into a vibrant mixed-use development with a new hotel, retail, office, residences, galleries, restaurants, bars, event spaces, meeting rooms, and green areas. Working with ODA and the wider design team, Buro Happold provided multidisciplinary services for the extensive redevelopment of 500,000 ft2 of space across Book Tower and the adjoining Book Building. Our MEP, facades, energy and lighting teams undertook a holistic rethinking of the site’s utilities and systems to achieve low-carbon operational energy The redevelopment of Book Tower delivered savings of 85% in embodied carbon compared to demolition and rebuild, offering a successful example of adaptive reuse and providing Detroit with a significant catalyst for its wider regeneration. Have you ever thought about how climate change affects your home and other buildings across the UK? Find out more in our latest ‘Sandbox’ episode... From heatwaves to arctic blasts, we’re seeing more extreme weather events than ever before – so how can we keep warm in the colder winters, and cooler during intense heat, without falling back on fossil fuels? In our latest podcast episode, ‘Weathering Heights: How can we prepare our UK buildings for the effects of climate change?’, we look at how the unpredictable and constantly changing weather in the UK is affecting our building stock, especially our homes. Although the UK's summer of 2024 was cooler compared to previous years, June 2023 set records for heat, and 2022 saw the country’s highest temperature at 40.3°C. Globally, heatwaves have been making headlines, and it seems the weather has been surprising everyone. In order to prepare our UK building stock for this ever-changing weather and the continued effects of climate change, our guests in our most recent ‘Sandbox’ episode discuss the situation at hand and potential solutions. From SMART technology, to retrofitting our existing buildings, to heating and cooling networks and efficient energy conservation, there is much that could be done to improve the current situation. Our panel also discusses the role the individual can play to help mitigate the effects of climate change across our buildings in the UK, through mutual cooperation, building physics education and introducing more sustainable energy sources into our everyday lives. Joining our regular host Andy Duncan in this episode, are Buro Happold experts Lara Balazs, Cities Energy Associate, and Tom Newby, Director, Structures. Our special guest in this episode is Smith Mordak, Chief Executive at UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and an architect, engineer, and writer, who regularly contributes to national and trade press including the Guardian, Financial Times, Dezeen, and The Architect’s Journal.
