As part of our mission to help business leaders scale-up, we've recently launched our masterclass series. The aim is to offer practical advice and guidance on some of the key areas for growing businesses. My first one is all about market research. You can't build a good business without understanding both your current and future customers but doing market research well is surprisingly hard. With that in mind I spoke to some experts, including Jane Ostler, Ross Farquhar, Claire Rainey and Andrew Tenzer, who all provided awesome insights for businesses taking their first step. My key takeaways - Don't do research for the sake of it: it needs to have a purpose to be effective. - Make sure you're doing research with the right audience and not just your current customers. - Be prepared to listen to the results, especially if it tells you something you weren't expecting or don't want to hear. #marketresearch #scaleups #business

Well, this is a first for me as a journalist: a bylined feature in the Mail on Sunday newspaper. A senior editor there read our influential Business Leader email newsletter (sign up, I'll put the link in comments), so knew I was off to visit the remarkable Station F campus for start-ups in Paris. We were approached to do a collaboration. For us, it was a chance to reach their huge readership of more than 630,000. This week, we’re joined by Plusnet Director and CEO Joanna Carman for another episode of My Business Leader Secret. Joanna Carman is no stranger to leadership, having held a range of senior roles at a young age. So what has she learnt throughout her career? Authenticity is the key to leadership. This lesson was prompted by an experience early in her career where she was told “We don’t wear trainers here.” Her response was simple – “I do.” And authenticity doesn’t just stop with leaders. The example trickles down from the top, and Carman soon noticed that others felt free to follow suit and wear trainers to work. With new generations entering the workplace, it’s increasingly important for leaders to understand that having your own identity, and supporting others with theirs is the key to nurturing a better workforce. Sometimes it starts with something as simple as wearing a pair of trainers. 📹 Dougal Shaw
