The BSA is exhibiting at next week's Local Government Association Annual Conference and Exhibition in Harrogate. From 22nd to 24th October, this must-attend event presents an opportunity to engage with local and central government representatives as well as officials from other public sector bodies. We will continue to promote the 'sprinkler message' to influence key decision-making at government level. The BSA aims to increase the number of business premises that have fire sprinklers fitted.
About us
The BSA (Business Sprinkler Alliance) is an organisation that aims to enhance protection against fire through the increased acceptance and use of fire sprinklers in business premises. Founded in 2010, the BSA aims to drive a culture change so that sprinklers are better understood and accepted as the norm for UK business buildings by raising awareness of the benefits that they can bring to businesses, people, communities and the environment. The BSA membership is made up of experts who represent organisations and trade associations that have an interest in fire sprinklers and fire protection.

Are we in danger of a blindspot in sustainability thinking? Carbon " accounting principles" have shifted how materials are selected and choices are made on projects. It's assumed that the impact of fire is being considered but is there a gap in knowledge and understanding? Today marks one year since the London Luton Airport car park fire. Yesterday, the Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) published a comprehensive report outlining the full extent of the incident and the operation in response from the service. The BSA agrees with the conclusion that sprinklers must be a key element in restricting these fires in car park environments. The Luton Airport car park fire last year exemplifies how guidance has not shifted. The growing threat of modern vehicles and their combustible materials is concerning given that guidance for car parks has not changed much from the 1960s. It's time that guidance got that update. One indicator will be the approach to these types of premises and whether they are better protected: https://lnkd.in/eGC4p4Gx #FireSafety #BuildingRegulations #FireLoss

A report from the Environmental Services Association found that lithium-ion batteries were responsible for around 48% (around 200) of all waste fires occurring in the UK each year. This costs around £158m annually and leaves a lasting impact on the surrounding environment. The waste and recycling sector continues to be typified by large fire incidents, including in Scotland where there were two major fires at battery recycling centres within three months. There is a debate to say that sustainability credentials should be separate to fire safety. One is elective, and one is a matter of regulations. We worry that there may be a blindspot in thinking around safely protecting our buildings against fire. While sprinkler systems cannot extinguish a battery in thermal runaway, they can play a vital role in containing the spread of fire. It’s important to note that sprinklers can respond earlier than fire service intervention, cooling the area and limiting fire spread until further measures can be taken. Given the devastation caused by the two recent battery centre fires in Scotland, it's vital that we enforce the use of sprinklers in these hazardous environments. We've long since known that current building regulations are not enough to protect business buildings. According to a survey conducted by the BSA, 69% of businesses hold the belief that they do. However, this perception contradicts the existing limitations of these regulations. We advocate for a necessary shift in this stance. In August 2023, there were two major fires in schools that caused much disruption. Neither the nursery in Hartlepool nor the primary school in Bolton had sprinklers installed and consequently, suffered significant damage. The ripple effects of such incidents are far-reaching as students are displaced and property is damaged. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eFc854MT #ThinkSprinkler #FireSafety #FacilitiesManagement

Preventing large, costly fires is achievable through a range of strategies. One of the most effective measures is the installation of automatic sprinkler systems, which support the Fire and Rescue Service upon arrival. These systems help to minimise the broader impact of fires, reducing costs for businesses and the economy. https://lnkd.in/euMVgR6u #ThinkSprinkler #FireSafety #LossPrevention
