About us

Buttress provides architecture, heritage and masterplanning to clients across the country. We’re a multi-faceted community of specialists. Experts, not egos. Team players with all the skills you need, in house. We’re thinkers as much as makers. We believe that architecture is as much about people as buildings, and that buildings should be shaped by their surroundings, their role and the people who’ll use them. Our work includes the public and private sectors, the urban and the rural, the residential and commercial, the traditional and the contemporary, and we’re renowned for our exceptional skills in heritage and conservation. Our approach is about combining the practical and the beautiful, the real and the visionary, responding to the brief and going beyond the brief, finding different angles and perspectives. We enjoy the unusual, the complex and the challenging. We respect the individual and we work collectively. Giving life to buildings and award-winning buildings to clients and the community. Ours is a start to finish service, built around quality, creativity and fresh thinking, designed to give you what you want, even if it’s not what you asked for or expected. Good to look at. Great to use.

A year and a half after completing work at King's Gate, Caernarfon, we're pleased to be back at the castle to work on the handrails across the rest of the site. We have been appointed to survey the eight towers of the castle and provide the necessary design information to support the replacement of the older rope handrails with new and improved handrails. Recognised as one of the greatest buildings of the Middle Ages, Caernarfon is a Grade I listed Scheduled Monument. Our previous work on the King's Gate unlocked the potential of the castle, increasing accessibility and bringing an increase in visitor numbers over the past year. We spend a lot of our time as architects thinking about how our buildings can shape and help communities. Communities are experts on their own environments and the buildings they use day-to-day - so building relationships with them is essential. We're attending the Locality Convention in Manchester next week to learn new ways to prioritise communities in our work and we're excited to discuss all things community. If you're attending, feel free to come say hello. Kimberley Corrall | Locality

In 1987, 80 residents of Ancoats started a sit-in at Ancoats Dispensary that lasted 223 days. They were protesting the closing of the emergency department which, at the time, was a vital health provider in the area. The department closing would leave the area without emergency care for the first time in over 100 years. Flash forward 37 years and today marks 223 days since the Dispensary opened back up, providing affordable rent apartments in Ancoats, and bringing a piece of historic architecture back to life.
