Mr Hunt vs Planning and Part O the next housing crisis Jeremy Hunt’s recent pledge to fix planning has left me speechless. I wrote to Mr Hunt as my member of parliament in early 2022, with a cry for help with the planning problems we were facing in Surrey and the response was an email to the head of Waverley Borough Council Planning department asking the then head to address my comments. The role at Waverley has since changed hands several times or more (we are not too sure who is at the head currently) and things have deteriorated to the point where both Waverley and Guildford find themselves rooted at the bottom of planning league tables floundering, due to a lack of staff continuity and more than likely a serious lack of funding. Sadly experience tells me this Cahncellor Promise is simply party politics and the suggested headline changes simply miss the point of the key issues and feels like headlines and political posturing, let’s hope I am wrong. …….. and next the impact of Part O which has clearly been established with no forward planning or thought and has caught manufacturers and suppliers napping. Proving Part O by calculation is proving both costly and time consuming. Current suggestions that this should be predetermined prior to or during planning design belies the planning process and has significant project cost and CIL implications which suggests anything but joined up thinking. Our role as architect is becoming more and more complex with less and less predictability in the process. I do hope our chancellor delivers but I fear from the response to my plea in 2022 that this is party politics ……. I do hope for the sake of design, planning and the project economy that I am wrong!
