This week we are celebrating neurodiversity in the workplace ♾️✨🌍 Neurodiversity encompasses a range of non-typical neurotypes, and it’s important to note that no two neurodiverse individuals, even within the same type, have the same experience ✨ Statistically more than 15% of the workforce are neurodivergent, and our current working system is ill-equipped to properly support these individuals. Neurodivergent individuals can face challenges such as (but not limited to) sensory dysregulation, overstimulation, and nervous system dysfunction, as well as fatigue and burnout from masking symptoms in a work environment. Additionally, neurodivergent individuals continue to face stigma and discrimination from those around them due to a lack of education and understanding, and a continuing use of misleading labels such as ‘high-functioning’ can lead to assumptions that less support is required, as well as shame for the individual who may be struggling ✨ Neurodivergent individuals deserve more than our current societal and workplace systems provide, and deserve more than ‘awareness’. Employers can do better for their neurodiverse employees by: 1. Attending neurodivergence specific trainings 2. Ensuring supports and accommodations are available in line with the Equality Act 2010, and are more than just sufficient or the bare minimum 3. Using person-first language, eg. ‘X is autistic’ and opposed to ‘X has autism’ 4. Understanding their neurodivergent employees are individuals, not just their symptoms ✨ At Cairn Ecology we are proud that a quarter of our workforce are neurodivergent, and we are committed to continuing to learn how we can better support our neurodiverse team and to encourage other businesses of all sizes to do the same ! ✨ #neurodiversitycelebrationweek #neurodiversity #neurodiversityweek #neurodiversityintheworkplace #celebratedifferences #inclusion #diversityandinclusion #ecology #cairnecology #sme #smallbusiness #scottishecology #environment #commercialecology #terrestrialecology #biodiversity

Exciting badger works this season! We have been working with one of our clients to construct an artificial sett at their site, with the excellent sett construction work done by AFP CONSTRUCTION (BISHOPTON) Ltd 🦡🌿 The site has two main badger setts, with one of the setts to be excluded with the planned works. As such, to ensure a comparable, compensatory resource on site, we have built a 4-chamber artificial sett 🦡🌿 The sett has been stuffed with straw for bedding to make it tempting for the resident badgers to move in, and we will now begin 6 months of camera trap monitoring to see if the locals will move in 🦡🌿 Badgers cub in February to early march, with them emerging from the setts in April-May, so watch this space we may even get some baby badgers on candid camera ! 🦡🌿 #ecology #cairnecology #sme #smallbusiness #scottishecology #environment #commercialecology #terrestrialecology #biodiversity #scottishbadgers #badgers #mustelidecology #scottishbiodiversity #artificialsett #badgersett #cameratrap

We would like to thank South Lanarkshire College again for asking us to represent at their #loveyourplanet event last week. The purpose of the event was to highlight the impacts of climate change and ways we can all reduce our carbon footprint. We had a great time speaking with the college's students and staff about the role ecological consultancy carries in sustainable developments and sustainable futures, and love to see sustainability and care for our environment being promoted by our local college! ✨🌿 #sustainability #carbonfootprint #climatechange #ecologicalconsultancy #southlanarkshire #southlanarkshirecollege #ecology #cairnecology #sme #smallbusiness #scottishecology #environment #commercialecology #terrestrialecology #biodiversity #scottishbiodiversity

Happy #February11 International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) ✨✨👩🔬👩🔬 and today marks the 10th anniversary of the February 11 movement, a movement to promote gender equality and empowerment women & girls in scientific fields! In the words of founder HRH Princess Dr. Nisreen El-Hashemite, “Every February 11, we celebrate the achievements of women, known and unknown, remembered and forgotten, who have forged the way for those of us in science today” ✨ But it wasn’t until the mid-late 19thC that women were admitted to scientific study or professions, or even recognised as scientists in their own right. And even still in the UK and US, women only make up around 35% of the STEM workforce. Gender equality in STEM is a core issue for IDWGS and the United Nations, stating that “girls will make a crucial contribution not only to economic development of the world, but to progress across all the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. ✨ Today we celebrate all women and girls in science. At Cairn Ecology we are proud to be a majority female business, female founded and with 70% of our team female, and not forgetting our student placement girls from last summer as the new generation of female environmental scientists ✨👩🔬 Our teams backgrounds, qualifications, and experience highlight not only the important place women and girls hold in STEM, but also that there is no one way or correct path to being a scientist! “Educate a girl, and she will change the world” ✨✨ #february11 #internationaldayofwomenandgirlsinscience #IDWGS #womeninSTEM #womeninenvironmentalscience #genderequalityinscience #genderequality #femalescientists #womeninscience #sustainabledevelopment #ecology #scottishecology #cairnecology #femalefounders #femalebusinessowner #femalerunbusiness

Last week our Early-career Ecologist Lewis Trussler-McCaskill graduated his MSc in Sustainability & Environmental Studies with distinction! We have gotten to watch Lewis grow as an ecologist, especially in his knowledge and experience in biodiversity and legislation, and are so proud of what he has achieved. We hope you will all join us in congratulating Lewis in this achievement, and what comes next in his journey as an ecologist!
I’m excited to share that I’ve graduated from the University of Strathclyde with an MSc in Sustainability & Environmental Studies, earning a distinction for both my degree and my dissertation on biodiversity policy and legislation in Scotland and England! 🎓 The journey has deepened my commitment to biodiversity policy and enhancement plans—areas I’m genuinely passionate about. Right now, I’m working as an Early-career Ecologist with Cairn Ecology Ltd., and I’m looking forward to building on this experience and diving even deeper into ecological work. Thanks to everyone who supported me along the way! Here’s to the next chapter in making a positive impact in ecology. 🌱

October is Bat Appreciation Month, and at Cairn Ecology we very much appreciate bats! 🦇🌿 Although the bat activity season has ended and the bats are beginning to get cosy for winter, our work surrounding bat species continues, as does our appreciation for all they do for our natural biodiversity. At Cairn Ecology, we currently have two licensed bat workers, with our full team experienced in bat survey types 🦇🌿 These adorable sky puppies act as great pollinators and feed on insects and midgies, helping to control the pest population 🦇🌿 Bat Conservation International and Bat Conservation Trust have a range of ways you can get involved in Bat Appreciation Month, including BatFest and Halloween events and Activities 🦇🌿 #batappreciationmonth #batmonth #bct #cairnecology #ecology #scottishecology #biodiversity #ecologicalconsultancy #bats #sustainabledevelopment #batecology #licensedbatworker #ecologicalsurvey #batconservation
