Transforming Decision-Making

About us

Cambridge Governance Labs (CGL) is a research and teaching platform founded in 2015 with a mission to disseminate and mainstream specialist knowledge about how good governance can be achieved in specific contexts. Cambridge Governance Labs empowers those tackling global and local challenges, helping them to identify and address specific governance shortcomings that are responsible for those challenges. The principal strategy to minimise governance risk is to translate what is known about responsible decision-making into practical tools for those who exercise authority on behalf of citizens. Through research and international cross-disciplinary events we bring together academics and practitioners from across the University and beyond to develop and refine strategies to promote responsible decision-making, i.e. decision-making that is structured by administrative law rules, accountable, evidence-based, ethical, inclusive and guided by policies serve the long term public interest.

  • Cambridge Governance Labs was honoured to participate in the recent summit for HR professionals in Malawi. The event brought together a wealth of expertise and passion for ethical leadership and good governance. The content shared during the summit reinforced the critical role HR plays in shaping ethical organisational culture and promoting responsible decision-making. We were impressed by the quality of the presentations and the enthusiasm and engagement of the attendees, reflecting the growing commitment to excellence in human resource management across Malawi. We extend our gratulations and thanks to the organisers, participants and senior Government of Malawi officials for making this a landmark event. The Malawi School of Government (MSG) and Chandler Institute of Governance (CIG), together with UNDP Malawi and Cambridge Governance Labs (CGL) celebrate the launch of the inaugural Malawi Public Service Leadership Milestone Programme on 29 April 2024, following months of planning and preparation.   Leadership milestone programmes are important platforms for capability development in any public service. They are tailored to the key stages of a public service leader’s career, and are integral for improving technical skills, building a shared ethos, and encouraging collaboration and alignment between Ministries, Departments and Agencies.   The Malawi Public Service Leadership Milestone Programme has been specially designed for this purpose following a comprehensive needs analysis exercise. The curriculum was developed by the MSG’s faculty and experts in collaboration with CIG and CGL, thus ensuring a good blend of international perspectives and local expertise. The inaugural cohort was intentionally selected to ensure a good representation across the Malawi Public Service, and consists of 15 Directors from central government and 35 District Commissioners and Chief Executive Officers from local government.   CIG is honoured to be a part of this important milestone in public sector development, and we are committed to continuing our work with the Government of Malawi to build effective and inclusive public institutions and strengthen civil service capabilities.   We are excited for the weeks ahead dedicated to learning, to new discoveries and to building camaraderie.
