To support the next generation of offshore Canadian sailors, the Canada Ocean Racing - Be Water Positive Sailing Team proudly launched its inaugural Pathway Program on Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada, from September 27-29, 2024. The program brought together four young sailors under the mentorship of Scott Shawyer who is currently training to compete in the solo non-stop round the world race, the Vendee Globe, in 2028. Beyond his own ambitions, Scott wants to build support for offshore sailing in Canada, particularly amongst the younger generation, and so the idea of the Pathway Program was born. Designed for individuals aged 18-25 with an interest in sailing or a career in the sport, the Pathway Program offers participants the opportunity to develop their skills and understanding of professional campaigning under the guidance of experienced mentors. Hosted at the Collingwood Yacht Club in Ontario, Scott’s home sailing base, the program leveraged a newly acquired Farr-designed X2 yacht, providing a platform for training and development in Canada while the team’s primary assets remain in France. The Pathway Program began with a Canada-wide call for applications, drawing nearly 50 enthusiastic applicants over a three-week period. “The level of interest we saw was truly impressive,” said Ryan Barkey, the team’s boat captain. “We were both surprised and encouraged by the passion for offshore sailing that exists in Canada.” The initiative also aligns with the Be Water Positive purpose that underpins Scott’s campaign, emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship and the protection of water as a vital resource. Congratulations to the successful applicants; Zoe Folsetter, Grace P., Jasper Waldman and Adrien de Pas whose participation played a crucial role in shaping the future of the Pathway Program. For partnership or support inquiries regarding the program, please contact Nick Moloney or message us via LinkedIn. The next round of candidate selections is scheduled to begin in April-May 2025. It is now less than one week until the start of one of the worlds greatest sporting and adventure challenges, the Vendée Globe. The Vendée Globe is a solo non-stop and unassisted around the world yacht race. It is an endurance event like no other in the sport of sailing and the greatest feat of human endeavour. The sailors will be at sea alone for between 75-100+ days, managing the demands placed upon mind and body in a 24/7 battle against the hardship of life at sea and an ever changing Mother Nature. The race start is the 10th of November. The course is from Europe, around Antarctica, in a West to East direction, before returning back to the start/finish port of Les Sables-d'Olonne in the Vendée region of France. Our Canada Ocean Racing skipper Scott Shawyer is campaigning towards becoming the first Canadian sailor to finish this epic race in the next edition of the Vendée Globe in 2028-29 (the race runs once every 4 years). This short clip provides a very small insight into the scale of this challenge. https://lnkd.in/e82g3z3h

To support the next generation of offshore Canadian sailors, the Canada Ocean Racing-Be Water Positive Sailing Team proudly launched its inaugural Pathway Program on Georgian Bay, Collingwood, Ontario, Canada, over the weekend of the 27-29 of September. Canada Ocean Racing skipper Scott Shawyer added: “Our campaign is based in France, where the elite of short-handed offshore sailing train, compete, and manage their campaigns. Through our participation in the IMOCA Globe Series, we have learned and continue to learn so much, and it was always my intention to share that knowledge with the Canadian sailing community. Offshore sailing, particularly solo or short-handed, is highly celebrated in Europe, especially in France, but it remains relatively underdeveloped in Canada. This Pathway Program is our way of fostering that discipline here at home, by sharing our learnings and experiences with fellow Canadian sailors.” Designed for individuals aged 18-25 with an interest in sailing or a career in the sport, the Pathway Program offers participants the opportunity to develop their skills and understanding of professional campaigning under the guidance of experienced mentors. We are looking forward to delivering the first of our Pathway Program activations this weekend in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada onboard the new @farrx2_ (27-29th September) . This is the start of a longer term initiative for Canada Ocean Racing and the @be_water_positive_sailing_team . The focus is to create a conduit for Canadian sailors, and lovers of offshore sailing, to learn more about our IMOCA Globe Series campaign and what it takes to compete at the highest level in short-handed offshore sailing. The project is led by Scott Shawyer and @sailor.barkey.ryan. Scott is President and skipper of the Canada Ocean Racing-Be Water Positive Sailing Team and Ryan, having joined the team around 2 years ago, represents proof of concept having worked his way into the role of managing all aspects related to our IMOCA 60, and is a leading figure in the sailing and coaching team. The ultimate objective for the Canada Ocean Racing-Be Water Positive Sailing Team is to support Scott Shawyer’s goal to become the first Canadian to finish the iconic solo, non-stop and unassisted round the world yacht race, the 2028 Vendée Globe. The Pathway Program shall identify opportunities in these types of campaigns, with the potential for successful candidates to gain further hands-on experience with the team.
