Organisers of a project looking at student veterinary nurse mental health education are asking student nurses and RVNs to help with their research. The project aims to explore how mental health and well-being are integrated into the learning paths of SVNs and will culminate in a set of evidence-based recommendations for how mental health education for veterinary nursing students could be enhanced. This is exciting new research as it explores nurse-specific mental health rather than solely vets or the vet team as a whole. The webinar will be taking place online via Zoom on 23rd April from 10:30 am to 11:30 am — anyone interested in finding out more or contributing to the research can sign up for the webinar by visiting the MMI website events page. The Royal Veterinary College has published new research in Preventative Veterinary Medicine, which concluded that surgical management of cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) ruptures in dogs causes better outcomes for reducing lameness compared to non-surgical management. In fact, surgically managed dogs were 38.9% less likely to have a pain relief prescription at 3 months post-diagnosis, 34.1% less likely at 6 months, and 32.7% less likely at 12 months than dogs managed non-surgically. The RVC says these findings also similarly demonstrate lower longer-term pain in surgically managed dogs. The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine has issued a consensus statement that sets new global standards for how primary care and practitioners should treat seizure patients. Dr Marios Charalambous, Neurology Consultant at Blaise Veterinary Referral Hospital, advocates for a stage-based and prompt approach that targets the abnormal impediments responsible for sustaining seizure activity and establishing refractory stages. Marios was joined by a panel of clinicians, who have jointly made these recommendations based on prevailing evidence in peer-reviewed literature, as well as their own extensive clinical experience. Does your dog like going to the vet? If not, you’re not alone! According to research, 65% of dog owners say they find visits to the vet difficult because of their dog's anxiety. With 25% of owners saying their dog runs away on hearing the word 'vet' and 30% actively avoiding a visit to the vet because of the animal's stress! To get around this issue, some dog owners use cryptic language to avoid upsetting their pet, while others disguise a vet trip by walking their dog first.
