About us
Cards for Life is much more than a deck of cards, it’s a connected way of seeing the world. A set of key concepts for ‘Living Systems Thinking’ that shifts our focus from ‘objects’ to ‘relationships’, helping us to regenerate the connections between self & world, humans & nature. These cards enable a better quality of conversation for deeper connection and a shared language that leads to more effective communication and collaboration. Both a personal guidance system and a collective sense making tool for developing eco and systems literacy, this regenerative vocabulary provides a shared language so people can define regeneration for themselves in their particular situation, sector and context. Whether coaching individuals and teams on their purpose, empowering community led visions or for regenerative innovation and design, these cards help to bring life's Dynamics into new ways of Being and Doing. Cards for Life are being used by teams, coaches, consultants, designers, educators and facilitators of all kinds across a range of sectors throughout the world. All the organisations below plus many excellent individual adopters are forming the growing community of practice, click their logos to check them out!

As I continue my journey to become a Cards for Life practitioner under the guidance of Thomas Mansfield, I’ve been deeply inspired by how his cards encourage us to think regeneratively and reflect deeply. I drew the Serendipity card—a perfect reminder of the beauty found in the unplanned. The front of the card invites us to pause and connect with nature: "Good fortune is found on new paths. Be in nature without a goal, change route, and take the road less travelled." The back challenges us to reflect on a broader scale: How can space be made for random occurrence in this situation? What kind of diversity can create the conditions for serendipity? What patterns, routines, or habits can be changed to create novelty? What random process can generate solutions and new approaches? As I reflected on this, I couldn’t help but think about biophilia—our innate connection to nature—and how it fosters serendipity. Being in natural spaces often sparks creativity, fresh ideas, and unexpected solutions. From observing the diversity of a forest ecosystem to walking a new trail, nature teaches us to embrace change, diversity, and the beauty of randomness. What if we approached our work, our spaces, and even our lives with this mindset? How can we design for serendipity—inviting moments of surprise and discovery into our routines and environments? Take a moment to pause, step outside, and reflect on the paths you take—both literally and figuratively. Who knows what you might discover? #biophilia #biophilicdesign #serendipity #cardsforlife #regenerative #systemsthinking

Gratitude to Stephanie Paterson for the mention and working so well with the cards and to The Resurgence Trust for sharing them and supporting the project 🙏 💚 🌿
The gift of finitude > https://lnkd.in/eVzDRThx "I am curious about everyday phrases people use when they talk about their working lives: phrases such as “work/life balance” and “work to live, don’t live to work”. They suggest that work and life are two distinct realms, and that real living only happens outside work..." Finding aligned purpose and value in your work has never been more important, with pension ages rising and the prospect of a 50-year working life looming. Stephanie Paterson, considers what work could look like if we genuinely see it as part of life - and understand that life itself is a gift. "If life is a gift, and a finite one, shouldn’t we do our best to make work a meaningful and enriching part of it? There’s a positive ripple effect if the work is done for an organisation whose purpose is to have a positive impact in the wider world. Life really is too short for work to be at best a tolerable part of it. Society’s challenge is to make work part of life’s gift." One of my recent collaborations has been using the ‘Cards for Life’ tool, designed by Thomas Mansfield. Our intention is to re-imagine the more traditional approach to HR processes (which can feel mechanistic) through a more regenerative lens. This is on the premise that as humans we’re part of Nature, so we need to live in accordance with natural principles to truly thrive! What we give our attention will grow 🌱 Grow with us! We now have a growing community of regenerators in Oslo - people who are curious about and engaged in regenerative ways to live life, conduct business, grow our food, educate our children and more. The Regenerative Oslo community is a WhatsApp-group and also meet physically in Oslo on a regular basis to discuss, explore, reflect and connect. 🙏 Thanks a lot to Idun Aune for being the initiater of this wonderful community, and to all the 66 members so far - and growing 🚀 Yesterday we had our monthly bonfire 🔥 at SoCentral in Oslo (se photo) with 11 members attending. Thank you Hannah Temple for the mention, it was truly an honour and so enriching to share the course and the cards with you. May they be a useful tool to aid your inspiring work and support the living systems literacy you articulate so clearly in many conversations and experiences of the new cycle 💫
As per my last post, I have spent much of the last months holed up, working on a book. But, having taken a moment to look back, I note an amazing assortment of experiences to be shared, even if tardily. ♾️ Cards for Life: I recently completed Thomas Mansfield's Thinking Like Gaia course which accompanies the wonderful tool that is his Cards for Life. It has been so joyful to join a community of people working with nature's wisdom and to exploring the myriad creative ways of using the Cards to bring that into workshops, meetings and women's circles alike (see photo 😉 ). Thank you Tom for this gorgeous and ongoing gift 🙏 🌍 The Earth Funding Lab: My post-graduate political economist self would have been overjoyed to learn that I now help host this community exploring how to cultivate economies that serve life alongside folks like Sarah-Jayne Clifton at Economic Change Unit (see one of her slides below). This session was part of our just-completed Basecamp Programme where we welcomed a new cohort of participants into the Lab. (It was also a joy to use Cards for Life at our in-person gathering in November 😊) 🔥 A Warm Data evening: I spent a beautiful, warm, connecting evening at my new favourite place in London, Kairos (Zoë B.), hosted by the wonderful Emily Stewart exploring the entangled threads and quantum layers of reality alongside friends, wine and stew 🫶 🧠 New Ecologies: I did a seminar series with the Institute for Postnatural Studies on decentralising the human and re-conceptualising the natural. I am so often in this space in an embodied way, it felt refreshing and indulgent to immerse in the cerebral, to scratch my academic side and lose myself in the words and ideas of Donna Harraway, Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, Rosi Braidotti and so many more. 🪶 Wild Geese: Another community taking flight. This time of participants of Change in Nature's nature connection facilitation course, a group of wild-makers, song-writers, space-holders and fire-fanners. Thank you Chloe and Andy for creating this community and for inviting me to share a session on Organisations as Organisms in our first monthly Wild Geese Wednesday 🌳 🐚 Life-Centred Design School session: an initiative run by Jeroen Spoelstra that I have had the privilege to contribute to for the last few years. Do check out the school, Jeroen has some great things planned for the coming year 🙌 📈 Wellbeing Economy Alliance - WEAll: It was so wonderful to be at the launch of the new England Hub and I really look forward to being an active part of this as it evolves 🍄 Nature-led Leadership: It was a joy to offer some thoughts on this as part of the The Bio-Leadership Project's work with Climate Coalition alongside Andy Middleton There is much brutality and ugliness in the world at the moment and it is essential not to look away from this or deny its truth. But, alongside the brutal and the ugly, there is also much beauty, wisdom and magic. And they are all true too 🙏 💫 ✨

Cards for Life are a tool for all kinds of regenerative practitioners, they work especially well in the hands of coaches. It's wonderful to see new offerings bloom! Thank you Ramona Fricke for your offering and for weaving the cards into your work in many different places and spaces ☺️ 🙏 ✨ Ramona Fricke is an independent coach & capacity builder for changemakers, grounded in her belief that any social impact work is rooted in our inherent desire to be authentically connected to ourselves, others, and Life as a whole. Besides 1:1 coaching programs and capacity building projects, she just opened applications for a unique group accelerator program for people either just starting out in the changemaking space or those of us in a career transition. “Blaze beyond the Haze” is designed to move changemakers from self-doubt and overwhelm through Life’s complexities into clarity and alignment about where and how to contribute their gifts.
