Yesterday we held a fringe event at Lib Dem party conference. Emily Holzhausen CBE, Ed Davey and unpaid carer Jaycee spoke about experiences of caring and what needs to change. Thank you Phoenix Group for collaborating with us to run the event.
About us
Across the UK today 6.5 million people are carers, supporting a loved one who is older, disabled or seriously ill. Our loved ones are living longer with illness or disability, and more and more of us are looking after them. Whether round-the-clock or for a few hours a week, in our own home or for someone at the other end of a motorway – caring can have a huge effect on us, our lives and our plans. Caring is such an important part of life. It’s simply part of being human. Carers are holding families together, enabling loved ones to get the most out of life, making an enormous contribution to society and saving the economy billions of pounds. Yet many of us are stretched to the limit – juggling care with work and family life, or even struggling with poor health ourselves. We often find it difficult to make ends meet if we’re unable to work or if we’ve reduced our working hours to care. Every day 6,000 people become carers. Many don’t know how or where to get help. It can be frightening and very lonely. For some it’s sudden: someone you love is taken ill or has an accident, your child is born with a disability. For others, caring creeps up unnoticed: your parents can’t manage on their own any longer, your partner’s health gets gradually worse. Looking after someone can be tough, but you’re not on your own. Carers UK is here to listen, to give you expert information and advice that’s tailored to your situation, to champion your rights and support you in finding new ways to manage at home, at work, or wherever you are. We’re here to make life better for carers. We give expert advice, information and support. We connect carers so no-one has to care alone. We campaign together for lasting change. We innovate to find new ways to reach and support carers.

We need urgent targeted action to bring as many unpaid carers out of poverty and put them on a stable financial footing. Help us by writing to your MP to raise awareness of carer poverty and urge them to put pressure on the Chancellor ahead of the Autumn Budget. Take action here: https://lnkd.in/ebNmx3xf

Our research shows that unpaid carers are much more likely to experience financial hardship. We found: 1.2 million unpaid carers across the UK are living in poverty. The poverty rate for unpaid carers was 50% higher than for those who did not provide unpaid care. Nearly 1 in 10 unpaid carers live in deep poverty in the UK #EndCarerPoverty Read our report here: https://lnkd.in/e9xCC3sh

Have you seen our new campaign yet? 👀 Our #ThisCountsAsCare campaign launched recently and we're so excited to see it on our TV screens already. We want to thank the amazing teams that worked with us on this to make it all possible. First and foremost, The Creative Shootout and MullenLowe UK for their hard work and dedication. We also want to say a massive thank you to all the amazing media supporters and creatives involved with this campaign including Clear Channel UK, Sky Media UK, The Guardian and Acast, markettiers, 72Point, OnePoll, and Eleanor Films. Having these amazing teams with us is beyond what we could imagine, and we are so grateful for their belief and continued support.

And both a thank you and congratulations to everyone in the Carers UK team who worked so hard on this campaign 😍
Today sees the launch of Carers UK's 'This Counts as Care' campaign, and we couldn't be more proud. It's been over a year since I wrote our submission for The Creative Shootout to be their charity partner for 2024. Eight month's since MullenLowe UK were announced the agency winner at the 'done-in-a-day' creative final. And months and months of developing and testing the concepts and execution of this, our first major awareness campaign. So to see it launched across multiple channels this morning - and knowing how important it is to increase visibility of how carers often don't recognise that what they are doing for partners, family members, friends or loved ones, counts as care - is truly amazing. This was a campaign on a scale we could barely dream about. Having access to the support and donated inventory of media partners including Clear Channel UK, Sky Media UK, The Guardian and Acast plus the insight and intelligence of markettiers, 72Point and OnePoll, has made this all possible - and an additional thank you is needed to Eleanor Films and all the other talent that was involved across the various executions of the campaign. Early results for our most recent State of Caring survey show that, on average, it still takes an unnecessarily long time for unpaid carers to recognise that what they do 'counts as care' - time that they are missing out on vital support and information. So if you, or someone you know is a carer - or if you just agree that unpaid carers deserve so much more recognition and support - please share our campaign and let the nation's unpaid carers know that Carers UK is there for them. #ThisCountsAsCare

We’re on TV! 📺 We’re incredibly proud to announce our new #ThisCountsAsCare campaign coming to a TV screen in your home! We want to thank the amazing team at MullenLowe UK and The Creative Shootout who worked incredibly hard to make this happen, we couldn’t have done it without them. On average 12,000 people a day become unpaid carers, we want to halve the time it takes them to recognise themselves as carers.
