About us

Across the UK today 6.5 million people are carers, supporting a loved one who is older, disabled or seriously ill. Our loved ones are living longer with illness or disability, and more and more of us are looking after them. Whether round-the-clock or for a few hours a week, in our own home or for someone at the other end of a motorway – caring can have a huge effect on us, our lives and our plans. Caring is such an important part of life. It’s simply part of being human. Carers are holding families together, enabling loved ones to get the most out of life, making an enormous contribution to society and saving the economy billions of pounds. Yet many of us are stretched to the limit – juggling care with work and family life, or even struggling with poor health ourselves. We often find it difficult to make ends meet if we’re unable to work or if we’ve reduced our working hours to care. Every day 6,000 people become carers. Many don’t know how or where to get help. It can be frightening and very lonely. For some it’s sudden: someone you love is taken ill or has an accident, your child is born with a disability. For others, caring creeps up unnoticed: your parents can’t manage on their own any longer, your partner’s health gets gradually worse. Looking after someone can be tough, but you’re not on your own. Carers UK is here to listen, to give you expert information and advice that’s tailored to your situation, to champion your rights and support you in finding new ways to manage at home, at work, or wherever you are. We’re here to make life better for carers. We give expert advice, information and support. We connect carers so no-one has to care alone. We campaign together for lasting change. We innovate to find new ways to reach and support carers.

“It’s fantastic to hear that the Government will increase the earnings threshold for Carer’s Allowance allowing 60,000 more carers juggling work and care to access this benefit. It’s the largest increase in the earnings limit for Carer’s Allowance since it was introduced in 1976.” - Helen Walker We are pleased that carers working and claiming Carer’s Allowance can now take on additional hours to earn up to £196 per week from April 2025, or over £10,000 a year. However, too many carers are still struggling with their finances despite providing so much for society. In addition to today’s announcement, we need to see a full review of Carer’s Allowance, as well of other carer benefits, to ensure these are adequate to support carers who are not able to combine their caring role with paid work. Every day, 12,000 people become unpaid carers for a partner, family member or a friend – many of whom don’t see themselves as carers, often unaware of their legal rights and what they’re entitled to in terms of support and benefits. This year’s theme for #CarersRightsDay is all about ‘recognising your rights’ – and our aim is to help carers recognise and understand their rights, and to access the support available to them, whenever they need it. Whether you’re a carer yourself or want to support those around you who are we have lots of ways to get involved. You can plan an activity for those in your community or at work, need some inspiration? Take a look here: https://lnkd.in/ed-qkQJW

Thank you to the the amazing team at Northern Trust who took part in our Team Community Connector volunteering activity. The team distributed hundreds of Carers UK resources in the area around their office, took part in several challenges, and had conversations with carers along the way. One employee said: "I benefited from Carers UK immensely when I was an unpaid carer. It made me feel I was not alone and I had a community around me, so it is only natural for me to give back to your amazing charity. I thoroughly enjoyed this morning's rewarding experience." 🧶 68% of carers cut back on hobbies/leisure activities. 🫂 60% cut back on seeing family and friends. Over half (51%) of carers said that their financial situation is having a negative impact on their mental health and wellbeing. Help us lift carers out of poverty by writing to your MP to raise awareness of carer poverty and urge them to put pressure on the Chancellor ahead of the Autumn Budget https://lnkd.in/ebNmx3xf
