Readers of our Weekly Report from Monday will know we were keeping a close lookout for European Energy Exchange AG's revised EU ETS calendar updating September-December auction volumes 👀 The Annex was released last night and crucially for EUA prices, the European Commission decided not to inject more REPowerEU allowances into 2024 to bridge a funding gap versus their €75/t budget assumption. This might not move the dial much fundamentally, and emissions are falling faster than anticipated, but it has a big impact on trading sentiment. With the cloud of potentially even more supply pressure now lifted, the #euets might just start to feel more balanced through Q3/Q4...(psst EUAs are are up over €2/3% to €71.50/t today...) 📈 Another couple of highlights ➡ 🔹 Sep-Dec 2024 EUA auction volumes will only rise by a marginal 5 Mt/2.5% versus the same period in 2023. 🔹 EEX also released the provisional 2025 auction calendar here https://lnkd.in/eAEemQdb Jan-Aug volumes are up 4 Mt/1% versus the same period in 2024. Sep-Dec 2025 will be revised next summer according to the new TNAC calculation and subsequent MSR withdrawal. 🔹 From 2025 EUAAs will no longer be sold separately from EUAs and are included in the usual Member State volumes. We were of two minds whether support around £40/t in the UK ETS would hold or not and it looks like...not. 🐻 The post-election downward channel is steepening again with successive lower lows over the last three sessions, hitting a ten-week low at £39.39/t today. 📉 Remember when we were talking about the pre-election Labour poll lead and a wave of investor demand pushing prices above £50/t for the first time since October 2023? Well today's Commitment of Traders update to the week ending July 19 shows investment funds have now slashed their net long position by 1.6 Mt (21%) to 6 Mt since its peak a couple of weeks ago. It's that time again and Carbon Pulse have published their must-read quarterly EUA analyst poll, including my Phase 4 forecasts out to 2030. 📰 Spoiler alert ⚠ the general consensus of the 16 experts is that: 📉 Weak short-term fundamentals are dampening the impact of potential geopolitical/macroeconomic upside risks and slack #euets prices may linger for longer into 2025. 📈 The bullish long-term policy-driven trajectory still stands, particularly from 2026 when supply and demand balances begin to tighten. Today's #KingsSpeech laid out The Labour Party's legislative priorities, aiming to unlock economic growth and "take the brakes off Britain".   It's encouraging to hear the Government is set to prioritise the UK's trade and investment relationship with the EU and #RenewableEnergy production and infrastructure.   Potential public and private funding has also been earmarked for #GreenSteel, #GreenHydrogen, industrial #decarbonisation, #gigafactories and #ports via new #GreatBritishEnergy, #NationalWealthFund, and Planning and Infrastructure Bills.   A meaningful and timely impact on UK #emissions abatement will only be realised if these more ambitious #climate and #energy policies are properly funded and efficiently implemented.   From an #ETS perspective, perhaps the recent sudden drop in UKA values to ~£40/t from £50/t should be interpreted as a vote of confidence in the new Government's likelihood of achieving its aims, rather than as an election flop.
