I’m pleased to share our new paper published in BMC Public Health, which investigates health and educational outcomes for care-experienced young people. This collaborative effort involved Prof Graham Moore, Dr Rebecca Anthony, Dr Sara Jayne Long and others. A summary below of our important messages ⬇ Study Overview: We analysed national administrative health, social care, and education data in Wales, focusing on over 30,000 children through SAIL Databank. We categorised them into four groups based on their social care intervention experiences: 1. No social care intervention 2. Identified as in need 3. On the child protection register 4. 'Looked-after' children Key Findings: - Care-experienced young people are more likely to struggle academically and have higher rates of emergency hospital admissions. - Children on the protection register had the highest risk of not achieving expected educational outcomes (4 times more likely), followed by those in need (2.5 times) and looked-after children (76% higher odds). - All groups with social care involvement showed increased likelihood of hospital admissions, including external causes and injuries. Implications: These results highlight the need for stakeholders to support all children involved in social care—not just those in out-of-home placements. The data also suggests that adverse childhood experiences, such as living with someone with mental health or alcohol problems, is associated with outcomes. This research was supported by ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council and involved collaboration across several institutions, including Swansea University, Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd, Wolfson Centre for Young People's Mental Health, DECIPHerCentre, Cardiff Metropolitan University, University of Aberdeen, and Public Health Wales. ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council funding awarded to transform data collections for child welfare research. We're excited to be part of a collaborative team of researchers led by Population Data Science at Swansea University. A new project has been awarded funding by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to investigate the feasibility of a new longitudinal birth cohort study focusing on children at risk of poor outcomes. Millions of children in the UK experience adversity early in life, impacting their long-term health and development. Despite their significant numbers, these children are generally absent from the UK's world-leading portfolio of national longitudinal child development studies. This year-long project aims to address this critical gap by exploring the potential for a new study that will provide vital insights into the challenges faced by these young people.
