Our limited-edition Tony Cragg print, Bluescape, is available to purchase from the House Gift Shop, or online.    There are three weeks left to acquire at our exhibition price of £850, which will increase to £1000 after the Tony Cragg at Castle Howard exhibition closes on the 22 September. The print is exclusive to Castle Howard, with each one of only 50 signed and numbered.    Exhibition Curator Dr Jon Wood said: ‘Bluescape continues Cragg’s fascination with anthropomorphism and with the representation of the landscape and the human body in union. This is a characteristic feature of his column sculptures where we see profiles of human heads and eroded geological formations merging together to become one. Several such sculptures, in polished stainless steel and wood, are presently on display at Caste Howard.   Bluescape carries a similar ambiguity. It presents a landscape of hills and clouds, which also reads as two faces, each looking up and down at the other. In keeping with this duality, Cragg has used the vertical portrait format for this landscape image, further underlining the combination of genres, and of the admixture of people and places.’   Bluescape is available to purchase in the House Gift Shop or online with delivery available to the UK, Europe, and the USA. Castle Howard Members can earn Membership Points on their purchase when they buy from our House Gift Shop. https://lnkd.in/dtf4V-nt

If you have visited us lately, you may have noticed that work is now well underway in the Tapestry Drawing Room, which is being reinstated in the style of Vanbrugh, and will be hung with the Vanderbank tapestries made for the room in 1706. Having been reduced to a mere shell by the fire of 1940, this restoration involves a new ceiling and floorboards – and every element in between! One of the prominent features of the room is the entablature, the ornate plaster work where the wall joins the ceiling, which consists of three, layered parts - a cornice, a frieze, and an architrave. The new entablature is based on an Ionic entablature designed by the 16th century Italian Renaissance architect Vignola, who was a strong influence on Vanbrugh’s work. We know from photographs that the cornice in the room before the fire was similar to this Ionic design. The detailed ornament for the cornice and architrave is based upon Vanbrugh’s examples on the south front of the house. The frieze is a rinceau design of plant forms, inspired by both decoration at the Ara Pacis, an Ancient Roman altar dating from 13 BC, and Vanbrugh’s decoration in the Great Hall. The entablature is being created by heritage craftspeople using the traditional method of hand run plaster, which is all created on site. While run plasterwork is a more difficult process, it is how cornices would have been formed in the early-eighteenth century and is therefore more authentic and appropriate to the reinstatement of the room. The final details will be applied to the entablature over the coming months, so do keep your eyes peeled and don’t forget to look up!
