The Alluvia: A Symbol of Tragedy or Artistic Expression? Jason deCaires Taylor's artwork "The Alluvia" for the River Stour, has ignited a heated debate in his hometown of Canterbury. While the sculptor intended the piece to provoke thought and discussion, some locals have deemed it insensitive, "shocking" and "tone-deaf" due to its timing. With several asylum seekers having recently drowned off the coast of the English Channel, and Canterbury's proximity to the area, the artwork has been perceived as a stark reminder of these tragic events. This has led to criticism that the sculpture is insensitive and fails to adequately consider the emotional impact on those affected by these tragedies. #TheAlluvia #Canterbury #Art #RiverStour #River #Artwork https://lnkd.in/egxPpT8K

Dubai's Floods: Climate Change or Cloud Seeding? DisasterReady Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC)
Director & Consultant at CDRAC | Researcher | Climate Change & Disasters | Charity & NGOs Consultancy
Dubai’s Floods: Climate Change or Cloud Seeding? ⛈ PreventionWeb recently published an article titled "The Weather Experiment That Really Flooded Dubai," with a catchy yet misleading headline. It suggests that 'cloud seeding' caused the floods, which claimed 21 lives across the #UAE and #Oman. However, the article itself reveals that the storm’s intensity was far beyond what cloud seeding could achieve. Instead, climate change, which increases atmospheric moisture and the frequency of extreme weather events, is a more likely cause. While cloud seeding enhances local rain, attributing severe flooding entirely to it distracts from the urgent need to address #ClimateResilience in vulnerable regions. 🔑 Takeaway: Titles should reflect the true drivers of these disasters, ensuring focus on real climate challenges. The Price of Hope: A Man's Fatal Fall and the Legacy He Left Behind
Director & Consultant at CDRAC | Researcher | Climate Change & Disasters | Charity & NGOs Consultancy
The Man Who Fell from the Sky: A Tragic Journey for a Better Life This story is a deeply tragic reminder of the extreme lengths asylum seekers go to for the hope of a better life in #Europe. The man’s fall from a plane is a heartbreaking symbol of desperation, echoing the countless lives lost in dangerous #Channel crossings to the UK. Fleeing war, poverty, and persecution, many risk death for the chance at safety. His brother’s journey 20 years later adds a poignant layer, reminding us of the enduring struggles and dreams of those forced to flee their homes in search of safety and dignity. It’s also a sobering reflection on the systemic failures that drive people to such extremes. #ChannelCrossing #Tragic https://lnkd.in/ehM2_P6u
