Volunteers across CDW have been working with Jangala since March, preparing their Get Box Wi-Fi devices, to support underserved and marginalised communities across the UK get online. Jangala’s Get Boxes are a long-term, end-to-end solution to digital poverty, providing a powerful Wi-Fi connection for up to 20 people. This internet access can be used by students to complete homework, allow young people to gain the digital skills to secure jobs, and help elderly people connect with loved ones. Jangala’s mission is one close to our hearts here at CDW. We believe in technology as a force for good, and helping those take advantage of all it has to offer to improve their lives. It’s why so many of our coworkers volunteered their time and expertise to assist Jangala scale their processes to meet the increased demand for Get Boxes, helping close the gap in the digital divide in the UK. Jangala has a mission to connect 4 million people to the internet by 2030 and it’s partnerships like this that will make this vision a reality. We’re currently preparing the Get Boxes for their final stage, with volunteers working from our NDC in configuring, checking, and packaging units for delivery to households across the UK who otherwise would not be online. We’re pleased to be working with Jangala to help provide internet access for people in underserved and marginalised communities. Over the next two weeks, a group of our talented coworkers across CDW are giving their time and tech expertise to assist Jangala with configuring, checking, and packaging the Jangala Get Box products ready for dispatch. With more power than the range of most home routers, Get Boxes provide Wi-Fi for up to 20+ users. In the UK: ⭐ Only 5% of state school teachers say that all their students have home internet access (Sutton Trust, 2021). ⭐ 35% of young people are restricted in their online activities because of limits to their family’s data allowance (Nominet Digital Youth Index, 2022). ⭐ 37% of young people are concerned they lack the digital skills necessary for securing a good job according to a new report by the Prince’s Trust Decoding The Digital Skills Gap 2024. ⭐ 37% of people over the age of 75 are digitally excluded, according to research from Age UK in 2021. Jangala’s Get Boxes will be sent to people and communities in marginalised areas across the UK through local authorities and other organisations, including Waltham Forest Council, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, and Coventry City Council. These Get Boxes will help bridge the digital divide, allowing people to access online education and give them support and opportunities that might otherwise be out of their reach. Yesterday, a group of CDW coworkers headed down to Brighton beach for a fantastic day of volunteering, alongside colleagues from HP. The team spent time litter-picking and clearing up the coastline; collecting a total of 25kg of rubbish. These efforts make our public spaces safer for people to visit and for wildlife to thrive.
