Last week, I spoke with #NHSTrust Chief Executives about the implementation of Group Models, sharing insights on the opportunities and inevitable growing pains from that transition. It was fascinating to listen to the distinct experiences of colleagues – whatever stage of the journey they may be. Globally, healthcare providers have been scaling to respond to changes in population needs, enable the adoption of innovations and enhance services. In England, from the 400 Trusts established in the 1990s there are now 215 with an increasing number becoming Groups or part of a Group. I offered a few thoughts on the drivers behind this: ·      At scale organisations have greater flexibility to respond to changing population needs and adopt innovations as they can offer a wider set of services and have greater opportunities to adapt assets ·      Economies of scale can be leveraged, particularly in the adoption of new technologies, in corporate services more generally and in the standardisation of proven practices.  ·      Specialisation of services and increasing service offers are changing workforce models, scale brings resilience but also opportunities to enhance training, development and experience. CF has supported Group developments across the country, and this slide sets out some of the key learnings we have found critical to success. For most people, being treated at or as close to home as possible is what is best for their health and how they want to be cared for. It is also most efficient and cost-effective for the NHS. Political focus and resources must shift to ensuring more people can access care closer to home in their local community and at an earlier stage of illness, with more continuity of care, rather than be left waiting until their health needs require hospital treatment. Our research with Carnall Farrar (CF) found that when you examine the NHS budget more specifically, the greatest economic returns come from investing in #PrimaryCare and #CommunityCare. Here we see £14 added to the economy for every £1 invested. The government needs to commit to support primary care further, including an expansion of delivery of care at scale by securing the future of primary care networks (PCNs), building on the success of GP federations in many areas and a commitment to establishing primary care provider collaboratives. This morning CF’s CEO, Hannah Farrar joined LaingBuisson’s webinar – speaking to 300+ industry leaders across the health sector about the role of public-private collaboration over the next five years of government. Labour set clear intentions in their manifesto to invest in the NHS and make it ‘fit for the future’. With waiting lists at an all-time high, leveraging public-private partnerships could play a crucial part in tackling capacity issues, also bringing in additive expertise and new technology.
