Fulfilling the dreams of kids and Disney adults alike got a lot pricier this Wednesday, with the most in-demand daily tickets at Disneyland rising between $7-$12, while annual passes to the park soared by as much as $125. Although the base entry fee of $104 is staying the same, the move hasn’t done much to combat the growing feeling among many people that a lot of Disney’s parks are becoming almost unjustifiably expensive. In fact, a recent report from Disney blog MickeyVisit suggests that the most expensive daily tickets for the California park have risen 114% in the last 10 years, from $96 to $206. More Americans have jobs than ever before. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ non-farm payrolls data reported that the US economy found itself with a blockbuster 254,000 new jobs in September, blowing past economists’ estimates for 150,000 new jobs. The latest version of the US Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey — a broad gauge of the economic and social issues affecting American households — found some not-so-surprising news: Americans are lonely. The survey reported that 1 in 8 people (12.6%) were feeling lonely either “always” or “usually”, including nearly a quarter (23.3%) of the younger population (those aged 18 to 29). While tech keeps trying to solve our "loneliness epidemic," it doesn't seem to be making much progress. Read on: https://lnkd.in/eFp4khPK

Apple spent billions making movies for theatrical release. It didn’t really work. Apple is now switching up its plan to pump $1 billion every year into theatrical releases, having spent more than $20 billion on a string of hit-and-miss movies and TV shows over the last 5 years. Its most recent effort, Wolfs — starring Brad Pitt & George Clooney — landed on Apple TV+ after a very limited theatrical run. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e-2gZY8w

The Department of Justice has announced that it’s suing Visa for monopolizing the debit payment market, alleging that the company paid competitors like PayPal to stay out of its way, and entered into various agreements with merchants that meant they could face penalties for using alternative providers. On the face of it, Visa does *look* a lot like a monopoly. Speaking for the DOJ, Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that "Visa’s unlawful conduct affects not just the price of one thing – but the price of nearly everything." It’s been a good few years to be in the chip-making business — but Intel missed the memo. Once the most valuable US semiconductor company, Intel has missed most of the AI wave that has propelled the share prices of its competitors. And now private equity firms and competitors are circling. Late Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported that fellow chipmaker Qualcomm has approached Intel about a potential acquisition, while Apollo is reportedly considering a $5 billion investment as the company embarks on an ambitious turnaround plan. Intel’s stock has shed more than 56% of its value since 2021, while the broader semiconductor sector has experienced explosive growth. Read more: https://lnkd.in/giY6q9RP
