On Saturday, 19th October, Tom Simpson, Managing Director, China, at the China-Britain Business Council co-chaired a business roundtable in Shanghai with Foreign Secretary The Rt Hon David Lammy MP. The roundtable provided an opportunity for the Foreign Secretary to hear the views of British business from across a diverse range of sectors, including finance, healthcare, consumer, automotive, education, and energy. During the roundtable, the Foreign Secretary highlighted the new government’s approach to establishing stable and consistent engagement with China. Lammy also reflected on the role British business will play in supporting the UK government’s economic growth mission and net zero ambitions. On behalf of CBBC and our members, Tom Simpson provided insights into the challenges and opportunities facing British business in China, while highlighting the importance of attracting Chinese investment to the UK. The company representatives present also had the opportunity to brief the Foreign Secretary on their operations in China and key issues regarding the business environment, net zero, and UK-China relations. The Foreign Secretary, the Rt Hon David Lammy is spending two days in China, where he will meet officials and British businesses in Beijing and Shanghai. On Friday, 18th October, Mr Lammy met the Chinese Vice-Premier His Excellency Mr Ding Xuexiang and the Chinese Foreign Minister and Director of the Office of the Central Foreign and Affairs Commission His Excellency, Mr Wang Yi in Beijing. This is the first senior visit from the new government, and sends a positive signal about the vital importance of our bilateral relationship."
