We won it! I’m delighted that, at Chirrup.ai, we're one step closer to changing the face of environmental monitoring on farms - and beyond - thanks to an investment from the British Government's Innovate UK. My vision was to develop an AI-driven ‘robot ecologist’, to be a simple, smart and businesslike way for farmers to measure and manage biodiversity. Historically it’s been assumed that the serious decline of birds and other biodiversity is the responsibility of farmers. But farmers, who manage 70 per cent of UK land, do not consistently monitor biodiversity. Volunteers, wildlife charities and ecological consultants have helped. But specifications are unclear or costs are high, so it has been difficult for them to marshal the evidence to respond to the challenges. Building on earlier work supported by Tesco and WWF, from 2025 we will start posting, to groups of ten or more farmers, a slim, yellow Mk3 Chirrup box. The new tech will be satellite positioned, charge up and download data wirelessly, and easy to self-install. The improved hardware, AI and data access will help farmers who are being asked to respond to changing government and food policies around bio-energy, food security and wildlife. This is how Martin Lines, a Cambridgeshire arable farmer and first-time user of Chirrup puts it: “What do I need to produce that gives me the fairest return? Some of that will be an energy crop, some of that will be food crops, some of that will be biodiversity as well. It's about interlinking and stacking those enterprises in my business that gives me real resilience going forward.” With the support of the farming research organisation, UK Agri-Tech Centre, the developments will enable, by 2028, cost-effective coverage of 15,000 locations, over one million hectares of mostly private land. But it will start with a trial across 100 farms. Prof Gideon Henderson, Chief Scientific Advisor, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs says: “We are equipping ourselves with the tools needed to better understand and protect our environment and investing in technologies that can be deployed domestically and globally.” We’re looking forward to working with our partners and supporters to find the first hundred farms to trial the new technology Hilton Foods, Diageo, Dairy UK, Bairds Malt Limited, Tesco, Dartmoor National Park Authority, The Lakes Free Range Egg Company. Finally, I’m often asked, why birds? And the answer is that birds are ecological barometers. They're everywhere. They are super responsive to change, and their presence tells a story about the life thriving in their territories, from insects and plants to the general quality of the ecosystem.
