Tomorrow I'm with Markus Vähälä Sofia Reyes and all our friends and allies from Plena inclusión and beyond. I am exploring the idea of Neighbourhood Care. What do I mean by this and why is it important? Reflecting on the history of deinstitutionalisation I think the following paradox applies: 1. We do know how to support everyone to be included as a full citizen (although we don't apply what we know and so most people are not included). See the graphic below which shows where people with learning disables in England live (and by extension, how the communities money is misspent). 2. We do not really know how to create inclusive communities, communities where mutual assistance, inclusion and citizenship for all is natural. Instead we focus on including people in communities that then often fail to sustain that inclusion. I also notice that many of my friends and allies are not sitting around waiting to be 'included' - people are starting to mobilise to be community change agents. This is a very important shift. See work of PFG Doncaster and many others. We still have a long way to go. And I think we need to change the challenge we've set ourselves. We need to go upstream to focus on the causes of exclusion. Welcome everyone on Thursday 26th September to EDU 3.0 event in Tallinn, Estonia, where the CEO of Citizen Network cooperative Mr Markus Vähälä is speaking with a group of experts about rebuilding Ukraine through humane, citizen centered and area based perspectives. We all need to build peace together and rebuild our societies in resilience, diversity, community, democracy, inclusion and justice. How can we create the skills and our collective potential? What are the keys to citizenship and caring neighbourhoods? Join the event online, if you are not in Tallinn. Welcome!

We are delighted to be working on this exciting event in November. Exploring how we shape a Neighbourhood of Care, we'll be taking a collaborative and participatory approach to explore how our neighbourhoods can enable us to care for ourselves, one another and the planet. Tickets are free but if you can make a donation please do.
Tickets available now to the Fearless Cities Summit for South Yorkshire: Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. We'll be taking over the ground floor of Sheffield University's Diamond Building and will be joined by 100s of local and global people working to create real community power and citizenship for all. Tickets are free - but donations very welcome!! This event is being co-hosted by Citizen Network and Opus Independents -and we hope it will mark an important next step in the development of the Neighbourhood Democracy Movement. I am very grateful to Ruth Hannan and Ester Ortega for supporting me on the development of our #NeighbourhoodCare strand and also to Research for Action and all our other sponsors. Lots of work still to be done... but excited to help make this happen. https://lnkd.in/eC9CYXH7

This is so important. Not just for the positive reasons set out by Joanna Grace but also for the grave threats we will face if we cannot see each other as equals. There are many philosophers, bioethicists and silent eugenicists out there. They believe that only certain kinds of human can really be counted as 'true humans' and they are lobbying for euthanasia and other eugenic measures. In fact I think they are often winning the argument because we are not very good at sticking up for each other and for the idea of human equality. Citizen Network Tim Stainton
'Reason alone does not account for what it means to be human, and language cannot capture the whole experience of life. As research seeks to better understand the lives we lead, it needs to do so with a recognition that new creative methodologies are necessary. We can, and we should, include people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities within research and philosophy, not solely to address the unfairness of their exclusion, nor purely to benefit from the fruitfulness that their inclusion brings but in order to maintain our own integrity as researchers seeking to understand life as lived recognising the fact of their presence as people living lives. The act of including people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities can at first glance appear impossible, sharing meaning across an intellectual divide appears to require difficult conversations, but as the photos included here convey far more eloquently than my words ever could: these are not difficult conversations. These conversations can be joyous – rich with connection and meaning.' #Phdlife https://lnkd.in/ekWp5pVg
