Content warning – this post discusses suicidal feelings. At City & Guilds, we recognise the critical importance of prioritising mental health in every workplace. This Mental Health Day 2024, we’re focusing on pressing wellbeing issues in the construction sector, where rising demands in a male-dominated, physically demanding industry highlight the need for stronger support and healthier work environments. 📊 Did you know? According to the Office for National Statistics, 75% of people in the UK who take their own lives are male, and men in construction are 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide than the national male average. This stark reality highlights the urgency of our purpose to create a safer and healthier construction industry. We have a unique opportunity to prepare learners for the challenges they may face onsite, advocating for health, safety, and wellbeing as they embark on their construction careers. Earlier this year, we hosted the 2024 City & Guilds Construction Conference, where industry leaders shared insights on welfare and well-being issues confronting today’s construction workers. 🔗 Learn more about how we’re addressing the health and wellbeing crisis in the construction sector: https://ow.ly/RJ4I50TISM1 Let’s seize this moment to foster positive change in our workplaces. Together, we can create a culture of care and support which offers real benefits in the industry. #mentalHealth #construction #wellbeing #cityandguilds #advocacy

Did you know that City & Guilds awards Fellowships? 🤔 A Fellowship of the City & Guilds of London Institute is a prestigious honour, the highest that can be conferred by the City & Guilds of London Institute. It recognises individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional and personal achievements in the world of industry and craft. Recently, we brought together two of our oldest friends, the City of London Corporation and Imperial College London, to welcome Fellows, employers and stakeholders in the engineering sphere to Mansion House for our Fellowship in the City event. Take a look at the highlights below, and read the full write-up from the event to hear from our panel of speakers, including Michael Mainelli, Dame Ann Limb and Kirstie Donnelly, MBE, on topics ranging from female talent in engineering to inspiring the next generation. 🎉 What a day! We were thrilled to host two incredible events at our London office. First, our Foundation celebrated the amazing impact of our refugee charity partners. Chaired by Faiza Khan MBE, it was inspiring to hear their stories and see the positive change they're making. Then, City & Guilds' Racial Equality Community Support Group, hosted our Elevating Excellence series, focusing on career development for Black History Month. In addition to the group discussion and table exercises, we were delighted to have Carmen Watson, Chair of Pertemps Network Group, join host Cecilia Harvey for an inspiring fireside chat about her career journey, sharing insights, and offering valuable career tips. It was a truly inspiring day, and we can’t wait to share more highlights soon! ✨ Thank you to all those who attended and participated in the activities. #BlackHistoryMonth #Inclusivity #SocialImpact #RefugeeInclusion The Launchpad Collective, Routes, Positive Youth Foundation, Breaking Barriers, CIPD, RefuAid, Jane Lancashire, Kotaiba Al Abdullah, Wieke Vink, Krishan Singh, Dalshier Othman, Jessica Ridgewell, Allie Platt, Assoc CIPD, Beatrice Walker, Mohib Ullah, Natasha Kalinga, Polly Rowe (she/her), Cecilia Harvey, Charmain Bucho, Remi O-Ogunleye, Shamsul Gani, Maricel Samson, Georgia Kay Morris BSc (Hons), Alexandra Austin, Chukwuma Bethuel Ibe, Fiona Coghiel, Lauren Roberts Nimisha Narayan, Titilola Omonijo, Ketty Rosine, Abid Ismail

It is our pleasure, Anthony Harte. We at City & Guilds are delighted to support an initiative that will proactively enhance employment opportunities for many. 👏
Opening our first Energy Transition Skills Hub ⚡ 🔌 🔋 The Pembrokeshire College Hub will provide over 600 people with the #skills and knowledge to find employment in energy projects. It is the first of three hubs being planned - back by Shell UK and forms part of our ambition to help 15,000 people into jobs, with a focus on the energy transition by 2035. On 27th September we welcomed over 50 guests from local and national government, skills bodies and industry partners. Thanks to Swansea Bay City Deal - Bargen Ddinesig Bae Abertawe and our partners Dragon LNG and Dragon Energy, but also City & Guilds for developing a Systems Control Room qualification. Great to see Parminder Kohli and Shell UK's commitment to upskill, reskill, and empower the next generation of UK energy professionals to address the net-zero skills gap while championing social mobility—something we at City & Guilds are proud to support.
I firmly believe you can’t discuss UK economic growth and clean energy goals without addressing the net-zero skills gap. Take Scotland, home to GB Energy, for example. To meet its offshore project demands, Scotland is expected to need up to 6,000 new welders and other technical professionals in the coming years. That’s why Shell UK is stepping up to upskill, reskill and empower the next generation of UK energy professionals. Addressing the skills challenge also means tackling inequalities, such as encouraging more recruitment from the socio-economically disadvantaged in the society, something I proudly champion more widely as a Commissioner at the Social Mobility Commission. Through Shell UK’s SkillsTransition programme, we are investing in the UK’s future workforce. We’re launching three new energy transition skills hubs in Fife, Pembrokeshire and Aberdeen, in partnership with further education colleges. Our goal? To help 15,000 people into jobs with a focus on the energy transition by 2035. I’m looking forward to providing updates on our progress.
