A dilapidated 125-year-old community hall in Finsbury Park will be brought back from the brink, sealed against the elements and made more energy efficient - thanks to new funding. The roof at the St Saviour’s Church community hall, known colloquially as ‘the barn’ will be replaced with a £100,000 City Bridge Foundation grant. Giles Shilson, City Bridge Foundation chairman, said: “This funding will not only help bring it back to life but will also make the building more energy efficient, saving money and reducing the church’s carbon footprint.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/d9R7qE_y
City Bridge Foundation
Non-profit Organizations
City Bridge Foundation is responsible for five Thames bridges and is London’s largest independent charity funder.
About us
City Bridge Foundation is a charity set up around 900 years ago for the maintenance of the old London Bridge. Through bridge tolls, rents, bequests and charitable donations, along with sensible investment and management, the fund has grown over the years and now has total assets of around £1.6 billion. Our primary aim remains to maintain our five bridges – Tower, London, Southwark, Millennium and Blackfriars bridges – but since 1995 we have also used surplus funds to award grants to charitable organisations across Greater London. We currently award over £30 million to charities across the capital and have made a further £200 million available in the five years to 2026 to support London’s charity sector. City Bridge Foundation is the working name of the historic Bridge House Estates. From 1995 to September 2023 our charity funding team was known as City Bridge Trust. In September 2023, our bridges and charity funding teams were brought together under a new name – City Bridge Foundation. Our sole trustee is the City of London Corporation – the governing body for the Square Mile. Members of the Court of Common Council – the City Corporation’s primary decision-making body – form the City Bridge Foundation Board which governs our activities.

As Karen Atkinson steps away from her role of Finance Director at City Bridge Foundation, she looks back at 25 years in the charitable sector – reflecting on what’s changed, and what lies ahead. In this short article for Civil Society Media Ltd, Karen touches on diversity, collaboration and technology, the specific challenges of being a finance professional within a charity, and how impact investment is the future. We’re extremely grateful to have had Karen’s skills and expertise to guide us, as well as her passion for all that we do, from the bridges we maintain to the communities we support. https://lnkd.in/eQS4iyWx

The Cornerstone Fund: new report shares insights gained from exploring long-term, collaborative #SystemsChange in London. This work has been driven by civil society organisations (specifically infrastructure organisations) working in partnership, and centring equity in their work. The Cornerstone Fund was launched in 2018 by City Bridge Foundation, supported by The National Lottery Community Fund, Trust for London and John Lyon's Charity, with in-kind support from London Councils, London Funders, London Plus and the Greater London Authority. This Learning Report presents important messages for funder, civil society, and others seeking to support thriving communities, including: 🔵 that you cannot effect systems change without a solid basis for collaboration, which requires attention to power dynamics 🔵 and that creating an evidence base is key, which may draw upon not only formal research but open and honest conversations made possible by a bedrock of trust This learning report has been produced by Collaborate CIC, learning partner to The Cornerstone Fund since 2019. This final learning report shares insights gleaned from Round Two of the Fund, and is based on conversations, workshops and partnerships’ own documentation of their efforts. https://lnkd.in/eEqafeR9

Excellent to see Propel nominated for Charity Collaboration of the Year at this year’s #CharityTimesAwards, even if we didn't quite make the top spot last night! We're proud to be part of this collaboration, creating change with and for London’s communities 🙌 London Funders / Mayor of London / The National Lottery Community Fund / London Legal Support Trust / John Lyon's Charity
We are delighted to be recognised at this year’s Charity Times Award! 🎉 Although we didn’t quite get the top spot (and huge congratulations to MAST) we couldn’t be prouder of our nomination for Collaboration of the Year for our long-term funder collaboration, Propel. Propel has already put money and power in the hands of the communities who are best placed to make change happen. We can’t wait to continue building on what’s been achieved so far and to keep learning about how we create change with and for communities. We are closing our rolling grants programmes to new applications for one year, on Tuesday 8 October 2024. This is due to an unprecedented surge in funding applications, with more applicants than we can possibly support. This pause will enable our team to process hundreds of outstanding applications, continue to support more than 1,150 grant holders, and finalise a new 10-year funding policy that will launch in autumn 2025. Find out more about the funding programme closures here: https://lnkd.in/ep-rgwdR
