The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, delivered her maiden Autumn Budget Statement 2024 on Wednesday 30 October, alongside an updated economic forecast from the Office for Budget Responsibility. Three months after coming to power, she set out the government's taxing, borrowing and spending plans. It is the first time the Labour party has had a chance to do this in 14 years. The Chancellor began by saying the Conservative party had presided over a period of economic decline that, she said, had left the country and its public services on its knees. She said the way to turn the country’s fortunes around was to ‘invest, invest, invest’, spending an extra £70bn a year. To do that, she needs money. And the money she intends to use will come from tax rises. Big tax rises. And the government also intends to borrow a lot more money. The Chancellor set out plans to raise £40bn. She had promised not to put these rises on ‘working people’ without precisely defining who she meant. ‘I know that this is a difficult choice,’ she said. ‘I do not take this decision lightly. These scams often involve minimal to no risk investments in various areas such as financial markets, property, cryptocurrencies, and precious metals and coins. On page 34, we see how these schemes often masquerade as legitimate investments.   Once a concern only for the very affluent, Inheritance Tax (IHT) is now an issue for many ordinary families, who may find themselves handing over an unprecedented portion of their estates to the taxman. The Office for Budget Responsibility anticipates that IHT will bring in £7.2 billion in the fiscal year 2023/24. Welcome to City Capital Financial Planning's Guide to the Autumn Statement 2023 https://lnkd.in/eFVxX6-w which has everything you need to know about the Chancellor’s tax changes. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, unveiled his 2023 Autumn Statement on Wednesday 22 November, alongside an updated economic forecast from the Office for Budget Responsibility.   The Statement was centered around ‘growth’, with Mr Hunt leveraging increased tax receipts from a stronger-than-anticipated economy to fund 110 growth-promoting initiatives. Mr Hunt said the government had taken difficult decisions to put the economy back on track and halve inflation, but ‘the work is not done’. He said his priorities are to avoid big government spending and high taxes and instead cut taxes and ‘reward hard work’.   Among the highlights were significant changes aimed at enhancing earnings. Mr Hunt's drive to 'make work pay' materialised through reductions to National Insurance for both employees and the self-employed, coupled with an uplift in the National Living Wage.   Additionally, Mr Hunt announced the permanent establishment of the 'full expensing' capital allowance, reforms to the R&D tax credit and increased business rates support for smaller enterprises. These measures are expected to bolster innovation and provide much-needed relief for small businesses.
