How do you Support Dyslexia in the Workplace? Many managers may find themselves in a situation where an employee discloses their dyslexia, or you might suspect that an employee is struggling due to undiagnosed dyslexia. It’s crucial to approach these situations with sensitivity and understanding. But, what can you do If you suspect an employee might have undiagnosed dyslexia? ➡️ Offer support in exploring potential workplace accommodations, irrespective of any dyslexia diagnosis. ➡️ Focus on observed performance issues rather than diagnosing. ➡️ Have a private, supportive conversation about the specific challenges you’ve noticed. Today is World Mental Health Day! This year’s theme is “it is time to prioritise mental health in the workplace” According to the Mental Health Foundation, 875,000 employees suffered work related stress, depression or anxiety resulting in 17.1 million working days lost. Employers have a duty of care and must do all they can to ensure employee health, safety, and well-being. This doesn’t exclusively mean that they can work safely and healthily but also includes protecting them from discrimination, prejudice and abuse, often requiring reasonable workplace adjustments to be made. It’s estimated that up to 10% of the population has some form of dyslexia according to the British Dyslexia Association, which means it is likely that you’ll encounter employees with this condition in your workplace. To celebrate Dyslexia Awareness Week, we want to celebrate all the strengths dyslexic employees bring to the workplace such as creativity, problem-solving skills, and long-term cognitive memory.
