🌪️ The NAO - a large scale atmospheric pressure see-saw in the North Atlantic - is a key driver of winter weather patterns in the UK and controls the strength of the prevailing winds. 💧 This groundbreaking study, led by Met Office Climate Scientists, identifies atmospheric water vapour as a significant controlling factor for long-term fluctuations in the NAO, which requires greater study and focus for use in climate change modelling. 📈 The findings indicate that under a very high greenhouse gas scenario by the end of the century, the NAO will increase to levels never before seen, posing severe risks of impacts from extreme weather. 💪 Mitigation efforts are crucial to prevent these severe impacts. 🔗Read more about this article and find more NI Climate News on our website: https://lnkd.in/eFEWZPmF 🔎Check out the full study here: https://lnkd.in/e6uG6RBF

❄️ Mountain glaciers have lost approximately 5% of their ice. Between 2000 and 2023, glaciers outside major ice sheets have lost, on average, ~270 billion tonnes of ice per year. 💧 As glaciers take time to respond to climate changes (years to decades), they will continue to melt over that time period. It could be the difference between losing a quarter or half of the world’s glacier ice, if global climate targets are not met. 🔌 Reminder: by 2030, 80% of Northern Ireland's electricity must be renewable-derived. But NI's renewable generation peaked at 51% in 2022, and has fallen each year on from that - largely due to the turbines being turned off so as not to overload the grid. 📈 Stephen Agnew of RenewableNI said "dispatch down" (this process of switching off turbines) "averaged 30% in 2024, double what could have reasonably been expected".
