SPRINGBOARD: Assembly for creative climate action takes place on 5 and 6 March. We're delighted to be joined by many incredible speakers during the two-day event on transformational change. On day 2 (6 March) one of the many sessions attendees will be able to sign up for is 'Scotland's just transition and the arts'. How is just transition planning progressing and what role should the arts have in developing a just transition? The session will be chaired by Anne Marte Bergseng, Programme Manager at ClimateXChange, and panellists will include Professor Dave Reay, co-chair of the Just Transition Commission, Aberdeen-based filmmaker Sara Stroud, and James Marriott from campaigning organisation Platform. They will discuss what a just transition should look like in Scotland, whether we are on track to get there and what role the arts can have in developing a just transition, with time for audience questions. Scotland requires an efficient transmission and distribution system to bring electricity from the locations where it's generated, like wind farms, to electricity users. Electricity markets need to change in order to progress this. We recently co-hosted the first Scottish forum on future electricity markets with the Royal Society of Edinburgh and The University of Edinburgh to discuss this topic. The event was an opportunity to connect researchers and other stakeholders with policymakers. Speakers at the event provided different points of view on how to reform electricity markets and potential impacts in Scotland. There were arguments for a more local pricing structure such as zonal or nodal pricing. Find out more about it in our: - podcast and blog featuring Dr Nicola Dunn and Melfort Campbell OBE DL FRSE - event report by Ronan Bolton, Chris Dent and Lars Schewe from the University of Edinburgh https://lnkd.in/ehchaJjJ #ElectricityMarkets #REMA #podcast

How can energy performance certificates (EPC) be better used? We recently published two reports on this topic. They concluded: - Metered energy consumption data could be used on Scottish EPCs to provide information to occupants or potential occupants by providing more accurate information on building fabric performance and giving a rating of how energy is used in a building. However, these could not currently be implemented as 57% of homes in Scotland do not yet have smart meters. Our report 'Using future climate scenarios to support today’s decision making' forms the basis for this guidance by the Government Actuary's Department to help public sector organisations in Scotland use more consistent climate scenarios when planning climate adaptation.
We have produced advice and recommendations on setting up a future climate scenario decision tool. GAD undertook research for ClimateXChange that will help provide a practical tool for public sector organisations across Scotland to carry out climate scenario analysis for adaptation planning. One potential way to reduce emissions from the livestock sector is to select breeding traits in livestock that lead to lower methane emissions. By 2045, breeding could reduce methane emissions from the digestive process in livestock by up to 9.5% (382.2 kt CO2 equivalent), according to our new report. The report identifies policy levers and behaviour changes required to achieve these emissions reductions. Achieving Scotland’s net zero goals by 2045 will require significant expansion of the renewable energy workforce, particularly in the onshore wind and solar energy sectors. Current training provision has the potential to deliver the skilled workforce required in these sectors, if it is strategically supported through policy certainty, targeted funding and changes in modes of training delivery, according to our new report.
