In honour of Black History Month, we wanted to celebrate a few of the prominent figures in the automotive industry’s history. Whilst we cannot highlight every Black pioneer, we want to spotlight these individuals who have impacted auto history and helped drive our industry and society forward. Charles R. Patterson: Founder of the World’s First African American Automotive Company, C.R. Patterson & Sons Company (1893). Born a slave in West Virginia, Charles escaped to Ohio and learned blacksmithing. He later founded C.R. Patterson & Sons in 1893, the first African American-owned automotive company. Competing with Ford, he shifted to manufacturing trucks and buses, becoming a key supplier for Midwestern school districts transitioning from horse-drawn carriages. 🚌 Garret Morgan: made a crucial contribution to modern traffic safety by introducing the yellow light. Before his innovation, traffic signals switched directly from green to red, causing accidents. His addition of the yellow signal helped reduce early automobile collisions. 🚦 Richard B Spikes: a pioneering African American engineer, patented the first turn signals. He also invented key automotive safety components, including safety brakes, an automatic car washer, and most famously, the first automatic gearshift. 🚗 Emeline King: In 1983, Detroit native King became Ford's first Black female Transportation Designer. Over her nearly 25-year career, she designed the interior of the award-winning 1994 Mustang, contributed to the 1990 Ford Probe and 2000 Thunderbird, and patented a 15-inch wheel cover for the 1989 Thunderbird. 🚘 Black History Month celebrates the rich heritage of the Black community and encourages reflection on the ongoing fight for equality. It also reaffirms our commitment to fostering diversity and creating a culture where everyone collaborates to achieve success year-round. #Blackhistorymonth

Paris Auto Show 2024 🚗 BMW CEO Oliver Zipse has urged the EU to reconsider its 2035 ban on new fossil fuel cars, warning that it risks shrinking Europe’s automotive industry and increasing reliance on China's battery supply chain. Zipse argues that lower-than-expected EV sales and unsustainable subsidies make the ban unrealistic, proposing a "correction" to the 100% battery-electric vehicle (BEV) target. He emphasized the importance of Europe's combustion-engine expertise, which supports a vast supply chain. While some countries, like Italy, support reviewing the ban, Germany opposes it due to climate concerns. Automakers also face near-term pressures, with 2025 emissions targets approaching, potentially leading to hefty fines of up to €15 billion for non-compliance. Industry bodies such as the ACEA are also calling for a delay in the targets. #batteries #automotiveindustry #automotivesupplychain #ICE

The US set a grid-scale BESS deployment record in Q2 of 2024. With over 3GW of new deployments in Q2 2024, energy storage is becoming essential to the US power grid, according to Wood Mackenzie's latest report. Grid-scale storage reached its highest Q2 deployment ever - 9,982MWh—a 59% year-on-year increase. California, Arizona, and Texas lead the way, accounting for 85% of the total capacity. Storage is addressing rising energy demand, weather volatility, and the need for grid resilience. The rapid growth in the energy storage sector, as highlighted by the significant growth in 2024, presents key implications for energy storage businesses recruitment efforts: Increased Demand for Leadership: As energy storage becomes a core component of the US power grid, companies will require strategic leaders with expertise in scaling operations, market expansion, and technology innovation. Geographically Focused Talent Needs: With California, Arizona, and Texas dominating 85% of deployments, there will be a high concentration of executive recruitment in these states. Leaders with experience in state-specific energy regulations and local utility partnerships will be especially valuable. Resilience and Risk Management Expertise: Executives with skills in managing grid resilience, responding to volatile weather patterns, and navigating the challenges of renewable energy integration will be sought after. Policy and Regulatory Knowledge: As the market grows, navigating the evolving regulatory landscape will be critical. #CLMSearch #CLMAmericas #BESS #energystorage
