I’m delighted to announce that as part of our ongoing commitment to invest in, develop, and support referees at Step 5 & 6, we’re launching a new initiative! As part of the wider FA Refereeing Strategy, we will be introducing weekly 1:1 coaching calls for referees who are not part of our FA CORE programme. Starting in early November, referees will be able to book 20-minute sessions with five highly experienced refereeing personnel. These calls will provide a great opportunity to check in, discuss a recent game or incident, or simply have a 1:1 chat about the season so far. I fully understand how challenging the role of a referee can be, and I want to ensure we’re offering the best possible support, both on and off the pitch. We’ll be making around 30 slots available each week, which will complement our match day coaching scheme—already delivering over 240 match day coaching appointments in just the first two months of the season! We’ll also be announcing additional CPD support in the coming months, with even more ways for our match officials to access and benefit from tailored resources. More details to follow soon! 👏⚽ #FARefereeing #Step5and6 #RefereeSupport

What a fantastic evening last night at the Northumberland Football Association annual awards! Also an honour to present one of the trophies (not the FA Cup though) 🏆 😆 With a new £4m HQ nearly here, higher participation across multiple pathways and better facilities and pitches for thousands, grassroots football really is striving in the North East. 🙏🏻 Unfortunately, there’s still work to be done to ensure every child has the opportunity to play this amazing game and also ensure they’re not being raised in poverty. A huge congratulations to the whole team for the last year and especially to Helen Beales and Jessica Kerr for putting on such an amazing event! Absolutely brilliant. 👏🏻 🎉 Huge thanks to David Copple and Club Supporter for their sponsorship too! What a great matchup. ⚽️ 📱 🌟

Crafting an epic summer grassroots football tournament is fulfilling and brings the community together. Wondering where to start? No sweat. Here are key steps to ensure your event is seamless and memorable: 1. **Define Your Goals:** - Who's the audience? - Age groups and skill levels? - Number of teams? 2. **Select the Perfect Venue:** - Ensure enough space and good pitch conditions. - Consider access, parking, and facilities. 3. **Plan Your Budget:** - Include venue hire, ref fees, gear, and promotion. - Consider fundraising through entry fees, sponsorships, and sales. A well-structured plan leaves everyone buzzing with good vibes. #SportsManagement #GrassrootsFootball

No woman should have to deal with misogyny simply because they are doing the sport they love. Peterborough Women's 21-year-old striker Tara Mae Kirk has spoken out about the sexist comments she receives online. After a clip of Tara celebrating a goal went viral on social media last year, Tara received countless inappropriate comments about her appearance... "I try my best to avoid reading through the sexualising comments, but I shouldn't have to do that at all.” "There should be things in place to ban fake accounts, they can be more damaging than people realise, especially to the younger girls who play football, or another sport" Tara says. Join us by asking the new Government to #EndMisogyny in sport through policies, criminalising misogyny and setting up an Independent Regulator to tackle abuse in sport. Wonderful insight #euro2024 #penalties #team #england
A penalty kick is a TEAM performance. One subtle England penalty shootout innovation in the 2024 Euro is their deliberate, structured & functional use of social psychology. Against the Swiss, each English penalty taker had a buddy assigned, who would leave the mid circle and greet the penalty taker back into the group after each kick. This is consistent with a very recent trend in football that teams now not only assign penalty takers, but also assign penalty taker protectors. It remains to be seen, but I assume this buddy would also support their assigned penalty taker if he were to fail. This was was painfully lacking in 2021, when Rashford walked 50 m alone after his missed shot, while facing a wall of teammates in an interlocked formation as if communicating US vs YOU. To facilitate this buddy system, against Switzerland, as opposed to most other teams in the world, England (refreshingly) do NOT interlock their arms in the mid circle. This looser formation enables flexibility to offer each other functional social support, which is more important than APPEARING to be supportive. In the huddle preceding the Switzerland shootout, Southgate gathered only the 11 players eligible for penalties (and key staff) - keeping everyone else (including substitutes) out. The contrast with his huddle in 2021 is noteworthy. Fewer people gave Southgate a better overview to effectively assign both penalty takers & buddies. Finally, as in 2021, England's goalkeeper Pickford handed the ball over to English penalty takers before their shots. With a twist - he then re-entered the penalty area together with his teammate, staring down the GK, to create a 2v1 situation against him. However, maybe this was too effective? The referee disallowed it from then. Don't get caught in the narrative that a penalty shootout is only about individual skill. It's an emotional & volatile event where structured social support to help each other buffer stress may make a difference. The penalty shootout is a glorious lab for studying and illustrating ways humans can perform, and support each other, under extreme pressure. See much more on this in chapter 4 in my new book: Pressure - Lessons from the psychology of the penalty shootout, where I try to draw out principles from this event that are applicable across industries and situations. https://lnkd.in/gJDkp2sK
