'What Starling’s £29mn fine says about UK neobanks’ struggles' 📰 Our Head of Economic Crime Laura Eshelby comments for The Banker:
🚀 Starling Bank, once heralded as a rising star among UK challenger banks, now faces significant challenges in the wake of a £29mn fine from the FCA for “shockingly lax” financial crime controls. This recent regulatory scrutiny highlights the complex balance between innovation and compliance in the banking sector. ⚠️ The bank’s reliance on the pandemic-era Bounce Back loan scheme and failures in its anti-money-laundering framework have cast a shadow over its trajectory, making an IPO unlikely in the near term. ⚖️ As the FCA continues to tighten regulations, smaller digital banks face the difficult task of disrupting the market while adhering to increasingly stringent compliance requirements. 💡 What can challenger banks do to balance innovation and regulation? With comment from Laura Eshelby, Abdulali Jiwaji and Jonathan Fisher KC Sally H. reports https://lnkd.in/ePkP7kSt

📈 Approved Push Payment (APP) fraud is on a rapid rise, with cases increasing by 43% compared to 2023, according to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Of the 8,700 fraud complaints reported between April and June 2024 alone to the organisation, 50% were related to APP scams. 🏦 As the threat escalates, new rules from the Payment Systems Regulator (PSR) will come into effect on 7 October, requiring swift reimbursement for victims from banks. In her latest article, our Head of Economic Crime, Laura Eshelby, delves into the impact of APP scams, the upcoming reimbursement schemes, and the latest fraud prevention innovations. Read more below:
https://lnkd.in/eCw9qzX2 I'm pleased to share this article ahead of the the PSR rule changes for APP fraud that are swiftly upon us... I've found it interesting to explore the scale of APP fraud, and how it manifests, and ofcourse to really understand the human impact offending can have on the victims. I've included some recent case studies, including a newsreader who very nearly became a victim herself and is now warning others how to learn from her experience. There is also an introduction to the use of technology- led by FCA and industry experts- including AI being used to try where possible prevent further harm. Ofcourse, there is no better way to understand how APP fraud is perpetrated than to hear it directly from the (former) bad actor themselves! I've included in the article a link to the very informative podcast with Alex W. and our CEO Thomas Drohan, and someone who knows the challenges from a law enforcement perspective, in trying to tackle this crime, Matt Horne Do reach out if you want to continue the conversation or set up a catch up with me, always happy to discuss all things fraud and crime related!
