The Employment Rights Bill was published yesterday, running to more than 150 pages and containing 28 changes to employment law. There are no major surprises as most of the changes were trailed in the Labour Party Manifesto and to some extent in the King’s Speech in July, although there is some unexpected detail. Employers yet to take any steps to prepare for the trailed reform can take comfort in the fact that only a handful of smaller changes are expected in the short term, including the changes to flexible working, which are not groundbreaking. The consumer and retail sector has historically faced the most antitrust investigations from the CMA. This is not surprising, as the CMA’s 2024 annual report stated that it has significantly increased its engagement with consumers and consumer groups, plus the consumer and retail sector is more at risk of whistleblowing and media scrutiny. But what are the trends in the outcomes of these investigations, and how can you prepare your business for the future? After years of prolonged discussions, the UK Government has at last settled on a course of action about high in fat, salt, and sugar (“HFSS”) advertising – or have they? Having dabbled with the possibility of bans, restrictions, and countless consultations, the UK Government is now decided (for now, at least) to implement stricter advertising restrictions for less healthy foods and drink products in October 2025. The hospitality industry has not traditionally been a highly regulated sector in the UK, but there have been a few recent developments spanning tips and service charges; a tourist tax in Scotland and “Martyn’s Law”, imposing new safety responsibilities on public hospitality and leisure premises after the tragic Manchester Arena bombing a few years ago. We explore these developments in regulation and more in our Autumn 2024 edition of Hospitality Matters. A return to larger deals may signal improved confidence among dealmakers, although higher-for-longer interest rates and persistent buyer-seller valuations gaps could stifle some European M&A activity in the year to come. The European M&A Outlook report offers a comprehensive assessment of dealmaking sentiment in Europe’s M&A market and reflects the opinions of 330 corporates and PE firms based in Europe, the Americas and APAC about their expectations for the year ahead.
