About us

CMTUK (Charcot Marie Tooth UK) is the UK's charity for people living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT). CMT is a hereditary, progressive, neurological condition of the peripheral nervous system. In the UK it is thought to affect 25,000 people and it is the most common inherited neurological disease. CMT causes disability as the muscles in the foot, lower leg, hand and forearm waste which affects walking, difficulties with hand functions, balance and loss of reflexes. As a result causes pain, fatigue and in severe cases breathing problems. There is currently no cure.

    #NobodyIsPerfect – but keeping active can make a big difference 💙 For those living with CMT, staying active can be key to feeling your best and managing symptoms... Regular exercise, even in small amounts, helps control body weight, supports muscle strength, and improves balance and posture – all important when dealing with CMT’s unique challenges! Activities like walking, swimming, yoga, and cycling can be great choices - and the best part? You don’t need a gym to get moving!     CMT is a group of genetic conditions affecting the peripheral nerves, which connect the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body It takes its name from the three doctors who first recognised the disorder – Jean-Marie Charcot and Pierre Marie from France and Howard Henry Tooth from the United Kingdom CMTUK exists to provide essential support to individuals and families living with the condition – from advice and resources to a supportive community that understands the challenges CMTUK also funds vital research, helping to improve diagnosis and treatment Want to help?
