Common Cause is a small non-profit that works at the intersection of culture change and human values. We’re driven by the belief that it is possible to design societies that magnify and strengthen the cooperative and caring parts of human nature. And that together, we can build ways of living that are equitable and just, and lie within our planetary boundaries. We know that values play a pivotal role in shaping our cultures and systems. The dominant global culture is out of balance, prioritising extrinsic values such as wealth, power and social status, in a way that has led us to the brink of destruction; with crises of poverty, inequality and climate change. We also know that balance can be restored with the elevation of intrinsic values which have, for too long, been neglected – values like community, creativity and unity with nature. Informed by decades of social psychological research, as well as other ways of knowing that centre the interconnectedness of human beings and nature, we are helping to build the foundations for a culture that truly reflects the intrinsic values which the majority of people prioritise. To do this we work with a broad range of cultural influencers to rebalance the values that we find reinforced in our day-to-day lives, opening up greater possibilities for imagining and nurturing new alternatives to living together on our one shared planet.
Journalist and media people, you are invited to this event we are running as part of the Trans+ Voices project at The Bureau of Investigative Journalism
The event will highlight the challenges the UK media faces in accurately representing trans and non-binary people, with our panel discussing how supportive journalists and editors can begin to overcome these challenges and have more confidence in doing and advocating for this work.
Please do help spread the word if you know anyone who might be interested.

Our inaugural Values in the Media half day conference taking place in London is now a month away.
Join us on Thursday, 28th November, for afternoon of talks and workshops exploring how the media engages with cultural values and impacts what society sees as important. Speakers include Eliza Anyangwe, Jeremy Mathieu, Hardeep Matharu, and Dr Nafeez Ahmed FRSA FSI.
Different views of how the world "is" and "should be" are subtly conveyed to us every day, shaping how we think, feel, and what we value as individuals and as a society; how much do we value financial wealth and status, for example, compared to community and flourishing nature? The media plays a key role in shaping these values, influencing cultural priorities and potential for transformational change.
At the same time, the media industry is under immense pressure—navigating social media, misinformation, AI, and eroding trust. As we stand at this critical juncture, what should the future of UK media look like to support both those sharing and receiving the news to thrive? How can a deeper understanding of values help guide the way forward? These are just some of the questions we want to answer.

I'm coming up to my 5 year anniversary at Common Cause Foundation and in those 5 years I have had many, many, maaaany, conversations with people about values.
I've noticed that when people hear the word "values" their minds tend to go in one of three directions. They think of values as individual characteristics, as company or organisational values, or they think about the role of values in strategic communications and narrative strategy. All legitimate responses.
But, I think there is another way of thinking about values which is too often overlooked or under appreciated. For me, this is where the real transformative power of values for systemic change is found.
New blog diving into all of this can be found on Culture Soup. I'd love to know your thoughts if you get a opportunity to read it ☺️

💫 🌍 The Impact of Advertising on Cultural Values 🌍 💫
Different understandings of how the world ‘is’ and ‘should’ be are conveyed to us - often very subtly - in numerous ways everyday. These messages add up to influence what we value, both as individuals and as societies. How much do we value financial wealth and status, for example, compared to community and flourishing nature? The answer, in part, determines what we think and do about social and environmental issues.
One of the biggest influences on our individual and cultural values is the advertising we are exposed to. We have had some interest recently in running a learning programme to unpack this and ask the question, 'what can the advertising industry do to shift its cultural values footprint in service of people and planet?'
If you would be interested in participating please fill out registration form and we will be in touch. Depending on the level of interest we receive, we envision charging around £200 a ticket to attend.

September was an amazing month at work thanks to Ruth Taylor and her #Values101Workshop. 💡
Thank you again, Ruth, for sharing what you all do in Common Cause Foundation. I’ve really learned too much during these last weeks. ✨
Thanks also to Mónica Roa López for enabling this kind of collective learning space in Puentes. 🤓

[Image of a quote in a yellow circle, which reads: 'As a peace and justice coalition builder, with a focus on narratives, culture, and storytelling, I appreciate the learning I gained from Values 101. The course helped me delve deeper into how values can help us build social movements that are aligned with our collective humanity. The course also positively challenged me to make time for personal reflection, to process what is meaningful, so I can contribute better to building a better world, from the heart. I 100% recommend doing this course. I'd love to do it again!"]
I co-wrote this blog reflecting on far-right extremism in the UK through the lens of narrative change.
The blog looks at the bigger narrative picture behind far-right extremism in the UK and also looks at seeds of hope in grassroots movements and narratives that unite us, which all of us can be a part of.
