Neurodiversity Celebration Week is observed around the world from 17th to 23rd March. The initiative aims to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions often attributed to people with neurodivergent disorders and learning disabilities. It is estimated that around 20% of the population has a neurological difference. Some examples of these include ADHD, Autism, DLD, Dyscalculia, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Tourette Syndrome. This week gives us an opportunity to find out more about the challenges faced by neurodivergent people – as well as celebrating their strengths. Compass Community Schools understand the importance of creating environments in which neurodivergent people are able to flourish and become their best authentic selves. Eight students from Compass Community School Essex successfully completed Essex Fire Service’s FireBreak programme. The 5 day course was delivered at Wivenhoe Fire Station, in Colchester. Experienced firefighters mentored the students throughout the programme. The boys were trained in a combination of practical fire drills and classroom-based activities. The practical sessions were carried out in the fire service’s drill yard, using real firefighting equipment to create a more realistic experience. The students also enjoyed classroom sessions, with advice on making the right life-choices discussed. Primary students at CCS Eld Park, in Thetford, Norfolk, have hatched their own chicks at school. This was carried out as a focus for their science topic: Living Things. Before starting the process, students studied how an embryo would develop into a chick and used a microscope to look at the different parts of an egg. Using equipment and guidance from the company “Living Eggs”, staff and students patiently monitored the embryos’ development. After 3 weeks of incubation, the chicks all hatched successfully. Students continued to care for them until they were strong enough to be collected by Living Eggs – where they will be ethically rehomed. During careers week, CCS Eld Park students learned about the skills and qualities relating to different job roles. Compass Community Schools understand the importance of guiding students towards the successful futures that they choose. As students had expressed interest in a number of specific roles, their careers lessons were shaped around these. (These areas included the food industry, health and beauty and policing.) Many thanks to Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity team, who recently visited CCS Athelstan Park, to deliver some emergency awareness training to students. During the team’s visit, students were first taught how to make a 999 call, so that all the vital information could be accurately given to the emergency services. Once this was mastered, they then learnt how to put a patient into the recovery position – to prevent a casualty from chocking and to promote their recovery. The final area covered was Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). This required the students to learn how to keep a non-breathing patient alive by performing chest compressions and breathing air into their lungs. All the students worked very hard to master the important techniques and are now well placed to help in emergency situations.
