I wouldn’t usually recommend an hour long video, but there is much of value here, and seeing a company so boldly and openly going after this ambition is hugely inspiring. Kudos to Bayer. The always insightful Jim Detert is a coauthor with Hannes Leroy of one of the most important articles I've read this year (in MIT Sloan Management Review). This doesn't surprise me because I've been using Jim's materials in my HBS classroom this year - to help students practice and develop the practical skills managers need to be effective. If leadership development is about helping participants grow and develop their skills, how well are we accomplishing that important task? Do you know how well your leadership programs are working? Life moves in mysterious ways. Almost 20 years ago I started working at Hewitt in Australia and was lucky enough to work for this guy (see photo). He had a profound impact on me and “what I wanted to do when I grew up” - as did several other leaders at Hewitt at the time. Fast forward 20 years and just as I step out into the biggest adventure of my life, by sheer chance, this amazing individual steps back into my world (and he lives 12,000 miles away) I’m not sure if I believe in fate, but I do love serendipity, and I’m a huge believer that if you give to the world - the world gives back. Reconnecting with Andrew Bell after 20 years, and being fortunate enough to spend time again absorbing his wisdom and experiencing his kindness, has added real fuel to the ferocious fire that started burning in my heart when I first began planning Concio with Ricardo Troiano I’ve learnt a lot in the last few months, but talking with Andrew has me doubling down on some of my deepest beliefs. We need to fundamentally shift the way many leaders are working, we need to give them deep support so that they can lean into their most complex challenges, and we need to STOP sending them away for multi-day “edutainment” experiences with the delusional hope that they’ll somehow come back transformed and ready to change the world. Ultimately, we need to stop separating our approaches to development and performance… As Andrew said in my most recent conversation with him “the only way to truly learn how to change is to do the real work that requires the shift” Please watch this space for a big announcement coming soon and for the pending launch of the Concio website towards the end of mext week.
