    > TODAY IS EARTH DAY. Yep, most of you didn't know that. This year's theme is Planet vs Plastics. While plastic oceans has received lots of media publicity, microplastics hasn't. Every week we absorb a credit card of microplastics. Scientists believe that microplastics in our bodies may be responsible for everything from cancer to Alzheimer’s to birth defects to falling fertility rates. Most fish are full of microplastics, as are a growing number of farm animals. Earth Day are calling for a 60% reduction in the production of ALL plastics by 2040. In 1969, at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, environmental activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, to first be observed on March 21, 1970. More than 20 million people poured out on the streets, and the first Earth Day remains the largest single-day protest in human history. On the subject is ESGs...     > SOCIAL IMPACT MARKETING. I got a call last week asking if I’d do a one-hour talk with the planning department of a well-known ad agency. They'd read one of my posts. What did I say? I declined, despite the big fee. This is what clients pay me and my colleagues to do, so why would I give away years of expertise? Plus it'd take 6 hours, not one hour, to cover this ground properly. SOCIAL IMPACT campaigns are the next generation of marketing – I predict 2024 will be full of them. Most badly done. The driving force is the S in ESGs (it’s what every CEO is concerned about because the shareholders demand performance against them). For those less familiar with SIM, essentially by doing good in society, it is proven that a brand can improve 5 key things:   • corporate reputation • brand equity • acquisition • customer loyalty • staff loyalty. More importantly, it can make a real difference to people, communities and society. However, you have to think beyond the default and obvious – donating to charity, foodbanks, schools and sending your staff out to do community work. That’s baseline stuff these days. And think beyond 'tick-box-tokenism.' This is about authenticity not PR hype. Numerous research shows across all ages conscientious consumers prefer to buy from companies that care. What is key is that a brand aligns with a customer’s values (don’t expect them to align with yours!). And investors want to invest in companies that deliver a positive contribution to people/communities/society. But we have seen what has happened with environmental marketing in the wrong hands – total greenwash. Brand Purpose - devalued. Clients need to apply some critical thinking and ask: • who can I trust to define my SOCIAL PURPOSE • deliver an effective SOCIAL IMPACT campaign strategy and • measure SOCIAL VALUES? My ad agency? Social media agency? PR agency? In-house? Or… an expert consultancy? It’s not rocket science, it's actually more complicated. Is it better to hire experts that help you deliver an effective outcome, than to try and blag it and fail? Authenticity is critical. And you really need to know how communities think. You need to approach it with a different mindset as it’s a different rule book from traditional marketing. As for the agency, here's the twist, I am doing the talk but not to them but to one of their big clients direct - pure coincidence, they saw the same post on LinkedIn. ....................................... > ESG WORKSHOPS. You've done your sustainability workshops. Followed by the environmental workshop. But what about the S in your ESGs?
