We are delighted to share our impact report for 2023. It was an important year of impact and scale for Conserve. From an aspirational start-up only four years ago, Conserve now has partnerships in Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique, Cameroon, and Kenya. We work hand in hand with local communities and these collaborations are already showing promise of a better future where people, the planet, and nature thrive. 🌿 Conserve Global at Wild12 and in California: A Conservation Journey 🌿 Lotus Khoza, Conserve Global Project Coordinator - Mozambique, recently spoke at the Wild12 Wilderness Congress, where he delivered an inspiring talk on the future of conservation in Africa and the critical role of Indigenous knowledge and frontline communities. WILD12, aka the World Wilderness Congress, is a unique international forum convened to explore how mainstream conservation can learn from and centre traditional leadership to enhance environmental protection. At Conserve, we're proud to champion this approach and to have attended and participated in this crucial forum. These communities are the true stewards of our precious landscapes, and their support and leadership are essential for sustainable conservation efforts. Following the congress, Lotus was in California to meet with partners and potential partners who share our vision of a just world where people and nature thrive. Discussions centred around the critical role of communities on the frontlines of climate change and how best to support their efforts. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who hosted Lotus and contributed to these meaningful conversations. With a background in sustainable agriculture and a keen interest in merging technology with environmental conservation, Afsa’s work will focus on reviewing technologies for EarthRanger and GIS mapping of new conservation areas in Mozambique and Kenya. As Women’s Month draws to a close, Esnart Mulenga, one of our female Community Scouts from the Tondwa Game Management Area (GMA) in Zambia, wanted to tell you a bit about her experience and what advice she would give to young girls considering a career in a male-dominated sector. These scouts work to protect the area’s natural resources and promote peaceful coexistence between communities and wildlife. Exciting news from the Kunene Highlands! 🌍Conserve Global, through in-country partner, Kunene Conservation, is teaming up with Ecotrust to empower communities through the Gender Action and Learning System (GALS) process. What is GALS? It's a powerful visual tool that promotes inclusivity and equality, helping communities plan for a sustainable future. Kunene Community Programme Manager, David Kangombe, convened the meeting of GALS Champions from over ten villages in the Orupupa Conservancy this week. At the end of the workshop, the champions presented the outcomes of their visioning process to the group. These champions will then share their knowledge and train other members of their communities to use the GALS methodology for strategic decision-making, gender justice, and systematic long-term planning for sustainable development, creating a ripple effect of positive change. 🌿 We're thrilled to announce a significant milestone in our conservation efforts! Conserve Global has signed a long-term agreement with the Mwai Association (Associacao Communitara para a Conservacao – Corredor Futhi) to deliver an effective long-term conservation management service, marking a new chapter in sustainable conservation and community development. 🤝 This landmark event brought together community members from six villages, seven Chiefs, and representatives from Fundo Nacional de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Moz, BIOFUND, Parque Nacional de Maputo, APA, Matutuine Church leaders, local investors, and the District Mayor. Their presence underscores the widespread support and importance of this initiative. 🌍 The agreement paves the way for collaborative solutions to human-wildlife conflicts, allowing us to develop long-term strategies for conservation while supporting local communities. By reducing these conflicts, we're enabling communities to better utilise land outside conservation areas for crop cultivation, tourism development, and other business enterprises - promoting both environmental protection and economic growth within these communities. 🌱🏘️ We're immensely grateful to our partners and supporters who made this possible. 🌟 We're proud to introduce Kalle Silwimba, Operations Manager for Tondwa Conservation Limited! 🎉 Kalle has a wealth of experience and strong background in civil engineering. He has expertly managed various projects, including the construction of residential and commercial buildings, drainages, and roads. His impressive career includes serving as Director of Works at a rural district council in Western Zambia, where he implemented innovative infrastructure solutions with community involvement, and as a Shelter/WASH Officer with UNHCR in Mantapala Refugee Settlement, where he honed his expertise in providing sustainable shelter and clean water to communities in need. As Operations Manager, Kalle will oversee our operations in Tondwa, applying his unique blend of technical expertise and community-focused approach to our conservation efforts. He'll be working to ensure our projects are executed efficiently and sustainably, in close collaboration with Tondwa communities. What excites Kalle most about joining us is the opportunity to apply his diverse experience in infrastructure and community development to conserve the landscape and wildlife, while meeting the needs of local communities.
