  • For #SouthAsianHeritageMonth we asked British Asian LGBTI about the work they do, what this month means to them and how they first started out as an organisation. Tell us about the work you do? "Our organisation is British Asian LGBTI and we offer social support to South Asians lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer/questioning and intersex regardless of their faith or culture. We aim to create a positive experience for South Asians LGBTQI within a safe environment and provide a platform for South Asian LGBTQI people to speak up and gain recognition and representation. We provide support for south Asian LGBTI individuals through social media, organising events inviting guest speakers, networking, signposting them to services related to mental health, and social support for our community. Our events aim to empower those individuals to find acceptance within themselves and the wider community." What does South Asian Heritage Month mean to you? "South Asian Heritage Month is very important to our organisation as we aim to unite the South Asian LGBTI community and celebrate our joint heritage, fighting discrimination and prejudice. I feel that respectful dialogue and communication between south Asian LGBTI and wider communities is so important and an essential first step to effective community cohesion. Our cultures are so rich and diverse - we should celebrate our heritage during SAHM with curiosity and learn to understand each other’s differences. In the past we have organised an event which celebrated author Prof Ruth Vanita and LGBTQI poetry." We'd love to know about how you got started and how your organisation came about? "Our organisation started in 2013, when I was once listening to my mum's favourite Indian radio station (with her). All of a sudden, I heard an anti-discrimination charity representative telling my own story of my experiences of being an LGBTI British Asian. They said that people who identify with their British LGBTI upbringing, as well as their Asian heritage are often subject to the double edged sword of discrimination. A survey they had conducted, had found that there are especially high levels of isolation, with members often subject to not only racial discrimination from LGBTI communities but also a deep routed homophobia present in many Asian communities. Although with a highly supportive family and friends my own experience is quite moderate, it really made me think- there are many more such lonely members out there! So I decided that if my mum's favorite radio station can defend this groups rights- then so can I!! Soon my two colleagues- Khakan Qureshi and Peta Cooper joined us and we’ve been going ever since – for 11 years". -Dr Siddhi Joshi (she/her)

  • For South Asian Heritage Month, we asked The Open Minds Project about the work they do, what this month means to them and how they first started out as an organisation. "South Asian Heritage Month seeks to commemorate, mark and celebrate South Asian cultures, histories and communities. It seeks to understand the diverse heritage and cultures that continue to link the UK with South Asia". Tell us about the work you do? "The Open Minds Project (shortly being relaunched as The Suryan Collective CIC) is a volunteer run grassroots organisation that is about supporting the wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ people with South Asian Heritage. We also seek to raise the profile of LGBTQIA+ people with South Asian Heritage and to highlight the specific challenges they can face in being seen and celebrated in mainstream LGBTQIA+ cultures and spaces. We welcome people from all faith or no faith backgrounds. We centre care and healing, and hold creative spaces for belonging. Art, poetry and movement are woven into all our community spaces. We are proud of our series of interviews with South Asian parents, listening to their journey to becoming accepting and supportive parents to their LGBTQIA+ children". What does South Asian Heritage Month mean to you? "South Asian Heritage Month means raising our queer visibility as diverse South Asians within the mainstream and accessing knowledge and creativity throughout the year. It also means us showing up and taking space, sharing our perspectives, showcasing our stories and joy!". We'd love to know about how you got started and how your organisation came about? "We got started in 2019 as a monthly peer support group for people living in London and now also run groups in Birmingham and online too. We recognised that there are specific issues that LGBTQIA+ people with South Asian Heritage face and our attendees keep telling us that they need more of these spaces. We started out as a group for LGBTQIA+ people with Punjabi Heritage and over time have broadened our invitation to all people with South Asian Heritage".
