Thought-provoking morning today with good friend & fellow project manager/architect Jesús Pascual at the RIBA's Designing & Specifying for the Building Safety Act conference, led by Jane Duncan OBE & sponsored by Hilti Group. Nigel Ostime kicked us off with a review of Competency requirements & was followed by Paul Bussey who touched on the topic of CDM PDs taking control of the design phase. David Brook then took us through a pretty frustrating, given the regulator delays, run-through of the current status of BSR Gateway 2 applications. Caleb Smith led a talk on designing Passive Fire protection, with Amanda Long then explaining the Code for Construction Product Information process for construction products assurance & certification. The final slot of the morning was dedicated to a panel discussion with Victoria Millward, Ben Oram & Professor Joan McCoy which I found fascinating, given the audience had plenty of interesting questions. I asked the panel a question on the likelihood of regulation of the client role, given I've worked mainly client or consultancy-side in construction delivery. My perception is that there's vast - sometimes excessive, given the amount of overlapping & how much confusion it leads to - regulation of consultants, architects, manufacturers, engineers, principal contractors, etc...but yet I see precious little evidence on the ground of clients being held to account & forced to upskill to help in ensuring that a tragedy like the #Grenfell disaster never happens again. A great chance also to network & hear fascinating stories from the design & construction trenches from other professionals working client-side in project management & in design practice, like Claire Collett & Gloria Berenguel Canton.
