The past few months have been particularly challenging for individuals at risk of homelessness, as the cost of living crisis and escalating energy expenses have driven more families out of secure accommodation. The most marginalised individuals in Aberdeen need our support more than ever. Latest figures released by the Scottish government reveal that in 2024 Aberdeen City experienced a 24% increase in households assessed as homeless – between 2023 to 2024 there were 1,270 homeless households in Aberdeen. The housing shortage in Aberdeen is a growing concern, impacting families across the city. The lack of affordable housing is pushing more people to live in unsuitable temporary accommodation, sofa-surf, or take to the streets. On the 14th April I'll be joining a group of people committed to helping people. we are sleeping at Balmoral Park, the home of Cove Rangers in the CEO Sleepout UK's first Aberdeen event, which will help people across the city who don’t have a place to call home. I'm raising money for Aberdeen Cyrenians, a local charity and social care services provider supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our community. First started by Aberdeen University students as a soup kitchen, Aberdeen Cyrenians now put the needs of North East Scotland's most vulnerable and socially excluded people first — leading at the frontline of service, care and influence for 50+ years. And you don’t have to be a tech genius or a media personality…you just have to be you, you and your team with some new knowledge and some new ways of working. We all have fear of something, especially now with all that is going on in our world. Fear creates uncertainty and that destabilises us, it distracts us and causes us to second guess ourselves and our plan. You know that getting yourself out there is important, but you have worries, perhaps you don't know where to start. I'm joining compassionate people from across Aberdeen for a night beneath the stars.
