The week is National Apprenticeship Week and at Core Highways, it is a time to focus on what we can offer our people and develop what we do as a business. Apprenticeships at Core Highways At Core Highways we have a history of supporting our central functions teams through apprenticeships, and this year, we are proud to be trialling the new Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) apprenticeship across our Midlands region. We have enrolled a pilot group of 8 experienced traffic management operatives who will utilise this scheme to develop into High Speed operatives. Jenson's story Jenson is currently undertaking a Quality Surveyor Apprenticeship with the business and works in our Welsh region. The scheme Jenson joined is seven years in length and he's already completed five of those with the business. We caught up with Jenson recently to discuss what he likes about the scheme and what he has taken from his learning, into his role as a Quantity Surveyor. 'I've really enjoyed my time on the Apprenticeship so far, as it has allowed me to have an excellent beginning to my working life, by having the opportunity to gain work related experience as well as qualifications to push my career to that next level. I'm looking forward to continuing developing what I do and enhancing my skills set with Core Highways.' ‘As an apprentice, I am constantly exposed to new challenges and experiences, which helps me to develop both professionally and personally. I work with so many teams across the business and have taken so much professionally from working with so many different people.’ ‘Currently, I am involved with National Highways SDF Southwest and East, Hinkley Point C and South Gloucestershire City Council, and I will soon take ownership of the Sizewell C account.' 'Some of my responsibilities include completing applications for payment, raising and pricing compensation events, forecasting revenues, pricing work proposals, resolving disputes and working with our operational teams to ensure the successful delivery of works.’ 'I'm looking forward to completing the rest of my Apprenticeship and understanding more about the business, how we work with our customers, and how my role can help us continue to grow and become the biggest Traffic Management company in the UK.' Being a business that enables our people to become the best version of themselves through training and professional qualifications is something that we are really passionate about. Together we can all play a part in ensuring that our people, the business and the UK’s road network become, hashtag #StrongerTogether.

Celebrating Success at the Kier Supply Chain Event! We recently had the pleasure of attending the Kier Supply Chain event in Birmingham, and we’re delighted to share two fantastic outcomes: Award-Winning Commitment to Social Value We were honoured to receive the Kier Transportation Supply Chain Award for Social Value! This recognition, spanning Kier Transportation’s entire supply chain, reflects our ongoing dedication to delivering meaningful social value. This award came as a wonderful endorsement of Kier’s engagement with their contracts, which confirmed how our consistent efforts in this area are making a tangible difference. Highly Commended in the Supply Chain Challenge As one of the final five (from 18 entries) we pitched in Kier’s Supply Chain Challenge on the critical topic of “addressing the skills shortage in highways and construction.” Our proposal was to form an industry group to expand the ROTL (Release on Temporary Licence) scheme, an initiative close to our hearts. The pitch went exceptionally well, and we’re proud to have been awarded the “Highly Commended” distinction, essentially placing second in this prestigious competition. Both achievements led by Christina Scant, Group Head of Human Resources are a testament to her incredible hard work and unwavering commitment to driving positive change. At Core Highways, we believe in fostering innovation, collaboration, and social responsibility—and this event was a fantastic opportunity to showcase those values. A big thank you to Kier Transportation for hosting such a meaningful event and recognising the efforts of supply chain partners. Here’s to building a stronger, more inclusive industry together! #kiersupplychain #collaboration #achievements #skillsshortage #strongertogether

Announcing Our Driver of the Year Winner! After careful deliberation and a thorough review of Samsara data, we are thrilled to announce the winner of Core Highways' Driver of the Year award! What is Driver of the Year? The Driver of the Year program celebrates drivers who consistently demonstrate exceptional driving behaviours, as measured by our telematics system. This system generates a driver score based on key safety and performance metrics. Who Is Eligible? All employed members of staff driving a Core Highways vehicle are eligible for this prestigious recognition. How Are Scores Calculated? Samsara evaluates driver performance using a set of predetermined criteria that monitor behaviours such as safe and efficent driving patterns. This data is then measured against each driver's total miles driven over the year, and the results help us identify the best of the best. The winners, in reverse order, are... Third Place: David Tysoe Nuneaton Depot Second Place: Thomas Johnson, Sandy Depot And the Winner is….. Matthew Johns. Congratulations to Matty! "I always look forward to celebrating our Driver of the Month and Driver of the Year programs. These initiatives are fantastic ways to recognise outstanding driving behaviours and celebrate individual professionalism behind the wheel," said Adam Westaway (CMILT, M.A.F.P) Head of Transport. "When selecting Driver of the Year, we meticulously analyse the data provided by our telematics and driver behaviour system, Samsara. Being awarded Driver of the Year is an extraordinary accomplishment. Showcasing Innovation for Safer Roads and Events Last Thursday, we had the pleasure of hosting one-on-one innovation presentations at our Nuneaton Depot. This exciting event brought together key stakeholders from the region’s largest infrastructure projects, their supply chains, and police forces across the Midlands to explore ground-breaking safety technologies. A special thank you to HRS for partnering with us to demonstrate cutting-edge solutions like proximity alarms, geofencing, and CCTV systems. These technologies play a critical role in enhancing safety at highway and utility maintenance sites, as well as at events, by: ✅ Alerting workers during incursions so they can move to safety swiftly ✅ Capturing evidence to support authorities in prosecuting offenders While responding to risks is crucial, prevention remains Core Highways’ top priority. That’s why we were thrilled to showcase our innovative BAAVA barrier to attendees, including Midlands police forces. The BAAVA barrier offers an unparalleled level of protection by physically closing roads at maintenance sites and events. With its ability to stop a van travelling at 30mph within just 5 metres, it’s the shortest stopping distance in its class. Compact and perfect for urban environments, this solution can: 🔹 Reduce reliance on HGV blocking vehicles at events 🔹 Cut costs, staffing levels, and asset usage 🔹 Lower the carbon footprint for major events The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees excited about how the BAAVA barrier can transform safety and efficiency across their projects. Thank you to everyone who joined us—we’re looking forward to advancing these solutions together and making a real difference in safety on the ground. #Innovation #RoadSafety #Sustainability #CoreHighways #Collaboration #StrongerTogether

Recently, members of the Milestone Infrastructure Civils Projects and Hampshire TMC team organised a fantastic #STEM Day at The Crescent Primary School in Eastleigh that we were immensely proud to be a part of. The day was filled with engaging, hands-on activities including bridge-building exercises, site setup demonstrations, road safety lessons, and even a surprise visit from a gritter lorry and a traffic management lorry. It really was an exciting day for the teams involved and the children at the school too. We are not sure who enjoyed it more! Sean Murphy, Regional Director of Milestone Infrastructure shared his pride in the team’s efforts, saying, “I am incredibly proud of our team at Milestone Infrastructure for their dedication and enthusiasm in delivering such an impactful STEM Day. Thank you to the supply chain and volunteers—your time and expertise gave the pupils valuable insights into future career opportunities, inspiring the next generation of civil engineers.” Core Highways are delighted to have contributed to this meaningful initiative, helping to spark curiosity about careers in civil engineering by demonstrating the exciting prospects in the Temporary Traffic Management sector. The children also got to understand the importance of safety for everyone around and working in roadworks. Simon White, Managing Director of Major Projects and Nationals accounts said ”Our Core Highways team thoroughly enjoyed supporting our key client Milestone Infrastructure in this brilliant initiative to raise the profile of our sector and the vital work our country’s roadworkers do” #StrongerTogether #Stem #Milestone #CrescentPrimarySchool
