Coventry-born sonic pioneer Delia Derbyshire is being celebrated with a new soundscape created by local school children for this year’s Gallery of Living History Schools Competition, championed by award-winning actor and director Andy Serkis. The winning entry from The Blue Coat School will be installed in the heart of Coventry in the base of the Tree of Hands statue in Starley Gardens, opposite Coventry University’s newly-opened Delia Derbyshire building. Another champion of the Gallery of Living History, Coventry University Chancellor Margaret Casely Hayford CBE, said: "I’m really impressed with the entries to this year’s competition and am delighted that the children's entries wanted particularly to celebrate women. The Delia Derbyshire soundscape is a very fitting overall winner, helping to highlight her childhood, education, her career with the BBC and her post-BBC work." Andy Serkis commented as well, saying: "The creative way in which children have approached this competition, thinking deeply about their subjects and why they should be celebrated, is amazing. I’m also pleased that so many people engaged with the public vote and that we now have an incredible soundscape to display paying tribute to a wonderful sonic pioneer in Delia Derbyshire." Really proud of Coventry University MA Film & Media Production graduate Madhuni Alahakoon who has done some amazing cinematography on the film Payamam (Journey) which has it's world premiere at Sheffield DocFest on next Thursday. 13 June 1.45-pm Link to book tickets. https://lnkd.in/e4nKsaEA Madhuni worked on this film alongside her graduate film on the course. I remember the juggling that Madhuni did in directing and editing her graduation film as well as going back and forth to Sri Lanka to make this film too. We are really proud to have Madhuni as one of our graduates. She is one of the first female cinematographers to come out of Sri Lanka and she is really making her mark. Sheffield Doc Fest is the leading documentary film festival in the UK. Premiering alongside Madhuni’s film this year is films for Channel 4 by Munya Chawawa, National Geo with Idris Elba. There is only 14 feature length films selected to be shown at Sheffield DocFest. We are proud to support this exciting initiative by Gallery of Living History to engage young people in our region in debates around history, memorialisation and commemoration and to work with the school teams to build their stories of their unsung heroes. #history #debate #soundscapes #audioproduction #immersive #storytelling #futureofwork #futureworkforce #education #golh #galleryoflivinghistory #collaboration #community
Creative schoolchildren are competing to design a unique piece for the heart of Coventry to celebrate an unsung hero of the community, as part of this year’s Gallery of Living History (GOLH) Schools Competition. We are supporting the competition by hosting a series of workshops for the schools taking part, designed to showcase the possibilities of using augmented reality and help pupils develop their skills in this area. The competition is being championed by actor and director Andy Serkis. He said that: "Entrants will get the opportunity to use technology such as augmented reality to help bring their visual soundscapes to life and I’m really looking forward to seeing the creative ideas they come up with to celebrate their local heroes." Dr Bianca Wright, PhD, who is co-ordinating Coventry University’s involvement in the competition, is forward to the collaboration that the competition will bring. She said: "Andy’s involvement in this competition is fantastic, he has a real interest in how and why we memorialise and it’s great for the students taking part to have the involvement of someone from the industry who has worked on so many amazing projects, playing an incredible variety of different roles. As well as that Andy is a natural storyteller with a great passion for what he does." Coventry University Chancellor Dr Margaret Casely-Hayford CBE, said: "The aim of this project is to celebrate those who have been marginalised, those whose contributions have historically been ignored and deemed unimportant because of their gender, their race or their class. We're thrilled to be working with Andy, who has such a passion for telling stories and to be giving young people the chance to memorialise their local heroes." This afternoon our Automotive and Transport Design students were visited by Alícia Rudeck, a CMF designer (and course graduate) that works for Envisage Group Limited, a design consultancy based in Coventry. One of the aims of our Auto and Transport Design course is to help students to identify a specialism in the field of design they have an interest in and to help them to develop in that area. Students are encouraged to engage with professionals and collaborate with specialists like Alicia to pick-up skills and new perspectives of design. Many thanks Alicia, your visit was greatly appreciated. Coventry University Coventry University College of the Arts and Society
