This month we have been very happy to welcome our 2024 Cowgills Academy recruits to the company! 🎓 We have taken on 14 graduates and school leavers as part of our annual scheme, with the new joiners being split across our Bolton, Manchester and Liverpool offices. This is the third year of our Cowgills Academy, and it's been a complete privilege to see each year's recruits flourish in a supportive and nurturing environment. We wish our latest intake the best of luck, and we look forward to seeing them thrive 🔥 https://lnkd.in/ehU62-23

Yesterday, Sumer and The Entrepreneurs Network launched their United Growth report in the House of Lords. The report explores what SMEs need to thrive in the UK, and what roadblocks they're coming up against. We were delighted to attend and throw our support behind this initiative, and as a champion of businesses in the North West, we endeavour to support our contacts through these challenges, and unlock opportunities for growth. You can read the full report right here https://lnkd.in/eC7Jqsxf

A thought-provoking report has been launched today by Sumer which takes a look at what businesses across Britain need to grow. An interesting insight into the real-world experiences of SMEs across the UK, and the disparity of thought between regions. Read the full report and recommendations from it, below ⬇

Today, Sumer launches #UnitedGrowth in conjunction with The Entrepreneurs Network. This report focuses on what #SMEs need to prosper. One of the more positive findings is that half of the business owners we surveyed are actively focused on growth in the next year. However, there’s widespread agreement that economic inequality between Britain’s regions is a problem – with those from the North East, Scotland and East of England most likely to agree. We conclude our report with a series of policy recommendations, including: 💷 Keep business taxes competitive; 🚉 Invest in transport infrastructure; 🏬 Increase the supply of business premises; 🏛️ Unleash the next wave of mayoral devolution; 🌍 Make Britain open for business. The SME business community is vital to our economy and we want to see business owners in the UK & Ireland thrive. To read the full report, visit: https://lnkd.in/eC7Jqsxf

We couldn't have put it better ourselves! Our Deal Advisory team has been on a roll, and momentum just keeps building 👏

Delighted to say that September has started with a bang! Our Cowgills Deal Advisory team have 12 deals in exclusivity, a similar number of projects for our DD/Transaction Services team and our Tax team are doing a fantastic job to ensure deals get done. Deals are moving quicker as we fast approach the October budget and we are also receiving quite a few new enquiries. We have also just recruited an additional team member in our Debt Advisory team and working with various businesses to raise funds for growth/acquisitions etc. Whilst some firms are declining work, due to capacity concerns, Cowgills deal advisory is a broad-shouldered team of 30+ with 4 new starters last week! We are delivering time pressured projects across our debt advisory, financial modelling, lead advisory and DD teams. If you are looking to raise debt funding or considering a transaction and require M&A advisers, due diligence, financial modelling or tax advice, then please contact me to discuss further.

What a day ☀ Yesterday we held our annual Cowgills Business Recovery Golf Day, and it was a brilliant success - albeit a bit windy! We’d like to thank each and every one of the businesses and individuals who came, donated and raised raised vital funds for our charity partner for the day, BOLTON LADS' AND GIRLS' CLUB. Thank you to Langricks Chartered Accountants, Bermans, River Capital, eCapital Corp., SIA Group , Asertis Ltd, Praetura Group, HORSFIELD AND SMITH LTD, Seneca Trade Partners Limited, Red Star Financial Management Ltd, Sedulo, ESA Risk, Close Brothers, Allica Bank and IGF Group. Special thanks to John McGinlay, David Lee (email), Kevin Moran and Moray Boyd for supporting the cause. We’ll announce the total raised next week! 💰 And a final shout out to Jason Elliott’s runaway golf trolley - it found a good home in a neighbouring garden. We desperately wish we had it on film.

Misinformation and lack of accountability at HMRC. There is a worrying trend - not solely aimed at HMRC but as I have the most contact with this service this case resonates. HMRC gave the wrong advice when a taxpayer called to check the VAT position on building a static caravan. Resulting in the tax payer being out of pocket by £16k. The appeal by the taxpayer was unsuccessful as the courts have no jurisdiction to award the VAT - as it is legitimately not due. However HMRC was criticised strongly by the judge given that HMRC encourage taxpayers to use the customer helpline service and rely on it (and lean on this when they are prosecuting those who err and do not take reasonable care with their tax affairs). The judge suggested that given the lack of care displayed by HMRC maybe it shouldn’t! The most damming sentence in the judgement for me though was: ‘I have not seen that HMRC has made any apology for this error’ HMRC are unlikely to give one given the trend for deniability, a lack of accountability and disregard for customers they serve. Unfortunately this is the trend seen across a number of public sector services of which we should expect better. #cowgills #vat
